What is a credit and why is it so important?

Credits determine:

• Whether you will move on to the next course
• Whether you will be promoted to the next grade level
• Whether you will graduate from high school

• 60% or higher in a course = 1 credit

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students are encouraged to research institutional admission requirements in order to ensure they have the proper courses required for admission to the university of their choice. Typically, this information can be located on the college or university’s website under the “Admissions” section.  

WHAT IS A BLOCK SCHEDULE?

ENGLISH

Language Arts 8  H                        English 1 Honors

(CFHS recommends that students who earn a final grade of a B or higher in Language Arts 8 H take English 1 Honors in 9th grade.)

English 1 Honors                           English 2 Honors

(CFHS recommends that students who earn a final grade of a B or higher in English 1 Honors take English 2 Honors in 9th grade. Students who pass English 1 Honors, but do not earn at least a B will be recommended for English 2 or may be recommended to retake English 1 Honors.)

SCIENCE

Science 8                               

Physical Science

 Science 8 H            Biology Honors

(Students who are enrolled in Science 8 Honors and Geometry Honors have a final grade in both Math and Science classes of a B or higher are recommended to take Biology Honors.)

Science 8 H   AP Environmental Science

​

(Students who earn at least an 85% or higher in Science 8 H AND Geometry Honors are eligible to take AP (Advanced Placement) Environmental Science in 9th grade. AP Environmental Science is a year-long course that counts as 1 elective credit (Semester 1) and 1 lab science credit (Semester 2). Please note that Biology is a graduation requirement so students will be required to take it in subsequent years.)

SOCIAL STUDIES

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, taking a Social Studies course is not required in 9th grade.

​

Students who choose to take one of the Social Studies courses offered to 9th graders will earn an Elective credit.

​

The 3 required Social Studies credits required for graduation will be taken in 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

Geometry with Statistics

Math 8                 

Geometry with Statistics Honors

Students are eligible to take Geometry with Statistics Honors after Math 8 if they meet 2 out of the 3 criteria:

• iReady score in the 61-84%ile
• SCReady score of 650 or above
• Math 8 grade of 85% or higher

(CFHS recommends that students who earn a final grade of an 85% or higher in Geometry Honors take Algebra 1 Honors in 9th grade.)

(CFHS recommends that students who earn a final grade below an 85% in Geometry Honors take Algebra 1 at the CP or College Prep level in 9th grade.)

Other Graduation Requirements

Physical Education & Health

​

• 1 credit in a PE (Physical Education/Health) course is required for graduation.

• Choose from the following (info. about each course can be found by checking out the CFHS Program of Studies )
• Physical Education 1
• Physical Education 1 with Dance
• JROTC 1

• Students who wish to take more than 1 PE course in high school can absolutely do so as long as they stay on track for graduation and have room in their schedules.

​

Computer Science

• 1 credit in a Computer Science course is required for graduation.
• Successful completion of Fundamentals of Computing 1 in middle school does count as your Computer Science graduation requirement.
• There are a few courses that students can choose from in 9th grade to fulfill this requirement if they choose to. Those courses are listed on the electives course sheet and say that they fulfill the requirement. CFHS 9th Grade Elective Options (2026-27)

Next Steps…

• Parents/Guardians of 8th grade students will receive this presentation along with a link to the 9th Grade Course Request Form to the email address listed in PowerSchool.

​

• Students will need to work with their parent/guardian to submit their 9th grade course requests using the Google Form by Friday, January 30, 2026.

​

• Students who are considering attending a high school other than CFHS should still submit their course requests by the deadline. It’s better to have the requests on file, just in case.

​

• This presentation along with the Pre-IGP presentation ‘The Transition to High School & Beyond’ and all supporting resources will be available on the Ten Oaks School Counseling Website for reference.

​

• Parents/Guardians should schedule their student’s IGP (Individual Graduation Plan) Mtg. with their student’s caseload counselor. Counselors will include information on how to schedule a meeting with them in the email. IGP meetings will be held from January until the end of April.
