Guiding Questions for this Session…

  1. How do we equitably ensure all students have access to earning college credits?

  • Is there a significant difference between access and engagement of students with Advanced Placement versus Dual Enrollment?

PROS

CONS

4

  • Passing Course = College Credit
  • Exposure to career content before committing to a college degree program
  • Positive correlation between DE and high school attendance and completion; college matriculation

DE

  • College Min Quals (teaching eligibility = Master’s OR extensive work experience)
  • College curriculum is not easily updated
  • Student failure or withdrawal could impact financial aid and/or could result in academic probation
  • Well-defined curriculum and (therefore) consistent rigor
  • Potential college credit
  • Credential + Bachelor’s (teaching eligibility)
  • Variable college policies on applying AP Exam grades towards college credits
  • Students have one attempt at the AP exam
  • Teacher AP training can be expensive
  • “AP-Prep” is costly which limits access to success

Questions we asked our counselors…

  • What are the implications of this data?

  • What are our blind spots?

  • What data is missing? What else do we want to know?

  • What do we want to prioritize as a district/locally?

13

14 of 17

The IMPACT…

  • Counselors started to shift how they did outreach around dual enrollment -
    1. hosted a table at lunch to promote dual enrollment,
    2. started to also make presentations in elective courses around after school dual enrollment opportunities

  • Not a zero sum game -- this was a way that allowed folks to see that we can provide more access across the board, especially for students that may not see themselves as "college-going"

Opportunities for Growth…

What would be helpful now that you have seen this data?

15

“What are the different types of dual enrollment?”

“Can we hear from ECC counselors?” - bring them in to provide information to us around available resources and pathways at ECC

“What do our students have to say?”
