What is the value of language?
What are the pros and cons of having only one language or having multiple?
What is the difference between language and dialect?
What is Language
Language is a system of communication that is mutually intelligible among all members of a society.
Accent describes the way in which someone pronounces a language.
Dialect is a variety of language that is unique in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
Fun fact: the only true difference between what we term a ‘language’ and a ‘dialect’ is determined by which majority is in power.
Reflection (cont.) - Pick ONE quote for reflection
Quote #1: ‘There is no retreat from English as the world language; no retreat from an English-speaking world” - Sir Shridath Ramphal.
Reflect on this statement. Why is there no retreat? Why would one even desire a retreat from English?
Quote #2: “Repeated attacks on our native tongue diminish our sense of self… Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity - I am my language” (Anzaldua 39).
Reflect on this statement. How closely connected is the self to the language? To what extent does language define us?
