  • This week you will get your teachers’ signatures for required classes
  • In two weeks, you will complete online registration in your Social Studies class

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Take the creation of your schedule seriously
  • Talk to teachers, counselors and family for input on your schedule if you need help choosing classes
  • Choose courses of high interest to you, not your friends
  • Colleges want to see at least 3 core subjects each semester in your senior schedule
  • Graduation requirements may differ from college entrance requirements
    • Visit the website of schools you are interested in attending to verify their requirements

Poor Educational Experience?

  • If you or a sibling had a poor educational experience with a teacher, you can request not to be placed with that teacher
  • Parent must write a letter to Principal Mike Fray, requesting not to be placed with specific teacher

Testing Out of a Class

  • Must submit your request in writing to

  • Required and elective classes
    • Will receive credit only for the class on your transcript if you score 77.5% or better on the assessment
    • No grade will be given on transcript
  • Tests will be given the afternoons of final exams week in June

World Language Requirement

  • 2 credits of the same world language 

                                    OR

  • 1 credit of world language and 1 EXTRA credit of Visual Performing Applied Arts or Career Tech Education credit  
    • VPAA/CTE classes are listed on page 7 in the Course Guide.
  • Middle school world language credits count!
  • Note: some colleges require at least 1 year of world language be taken during high school – check individual school websites for specific details

Advanced Placement (AP) Classes

  • College-level curriculum taught in high school
    • Application required for admission to some courses- check with your teacher if you are interested!
  • More challenging
  • Require motivated students
    • Summer work often required
  • Better preparation for college-level work
  • Weighted grades (A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0)
  • Opportunity to earn college credit by achieving a qualifying score on AP exams given in May
  • Students can use the AP Course Guide to find out more about each AP class
  • All AP students MUST submit a signed AP Contract

Online Course Options

  • Students may take up to 2 courses/semester and still be considered a GBHS student
  • Requires self-discipline and strong time management
  • Enter course code OL001 and write in the name of the online course you’d like to take

Dual Enrollment

  • This program allows freshmen through seniors to take a class at a local college/university as part of their regular school day.
  • Students receive credit from the college as well as from GBHS.
    • Credit may not apply to U of M-Ann Arbor
  • Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA for Mott Community College or 3.2 GPA for U of M-Flint.
  • There are several guidelines to consider when selecting college courses:
    • The college class must not be offered at GBHS
    • Divinity/Theology, Hobby/Craft, Rec/Physical Activity classes are excluded
    • The college class must align with your GBHS schedule
  • Grand Blanc Community Schools pays a set amount for tuition for the class. Parents may need to contribute to the cost of the class depending on the college chosen.
  • See Mrs. Clark in the Counseling Office for details.
  • DO NOT sign up for Dual Enrollment on your Course Request Sheet. Interested students should attend a meeting in the Spring. Your schedule will be adjusted later.

Career & Technical Education (CTE) Classes

  • Will count as 2nd year of World Language

Genesee Career Institute (GCI)

  • Provides career and technical education
  • Offer programs that GB does not
  • Juniors and Seniors only
    • With exception of JROTC
  • Transportation provided; bus leaves from GBHS
  • Three sessions to choose from:
    • Session I begins at 7:00am
    • Session II begins at 8:50am
    • Session III begins at 12:05pm
  • All applications due by February 20th
    • Application links will be sent out later this week through StudentVue and will also be available on the HS website

  • Do you have the potential to be a Division I or II college athlete?

How to Use the Course Guide to Select Electives��

 

 

 

Click the class name to launch a video from the instructor of most elective classes

½ CR = semester-long class

1 CR = year-long class

Prerequisites explain what must be done before you can take the class. You must meet prerequisites in order to be enrolled in a class.

Application: you must complete and turn in an application by the deadline provided by the instructor

Instructor Approval: you must have written approval from the instructor to take the course

How to Use the Course Request Sheet to Plan Your Schedule

You have two credits of electives remaining to fill.

2 year-long classes, 4 semester-long classes, or a combination of both

Your current math teacher will work with you to make a recommendation for next year.

Choose at least 1 year-long alternate and 2 semester-long alternates – take this seriously, you will likely see 1 in your schedule

Your current English & social studies teachers will work with you to make a recommendation for next year.

Your current science teacher will work with you to place you in the correct level of science
