Less skating opportunity with increasing temps.

• Free skating opportunities in Nelson
• 3 – 1hr timeslot/week at NDCC
• Low elevation: (now only a few days/year)
• Cottonwood Lake, canal ponds, kok ponds, Riondel rink, Harrop ponds
• Higher elevation with more sun:
• lion’s park
• Bonnington rink – didn’t install this year
• Higher elevation with shade:
• MM- handful skate-able days in 2026
• best option in region -established wc & parking
• people come from all over the region to skate
• well established location and maint. team
• would allow year-round use of the park!

Rink Size and location:

• Current budget & proposal is for a rink of the same size (40x80ft) & location as current temporary rink
• Depending on conditions of permissions given we are keen to maximize the size of rink in the space as the increased budget would be nominal compared to the benefit.
• We are keen to collaborate as needed with cycling club on rink placement and any enhancements required to ensure bike/walking trail entrance is easily accessible

Operator Exemption! 

• If using standard synthetic Freon (Group A1 refrigerant like R-449A or R-507), the total compressor nameplate rating sits safely under the 125 kW provincial threshold.
• You do not legally require a full-time certified Power Engineer on payroll for daily monitoring.

Roll Out Chiller Specs: 

• Rink Kit: eleven Roll-up Rink Mats (4 ft. wide x 80 ft. long)
• Chiller Plant: Qty 2 x 10-Ton Chillers (15 HP Compressors each)
• Total Capacity: 20 Tons / 30 HP Compression (Indirect Glycol System)
• Licensed Refrigeration Tech:  Assembly, charging, and TSBC permits
• Commercial Electrical Contractor: 3-phase sub-panel installation, trenching/conduit runs to outdoor slab, disconnect switches, and FSR code sign-off)

The chiller has the capacity to create ice Oct-Mar.

The amount of electricity required depends on ambient temperatures and the roof will also decrease consumption.

Potential Funders

We haven’t approached too many possible funders until we get permission

• Columbia Basin Trust (15-25% of capitol cost up to 250K) they expressed interest
• RDCK – Multiple areas – capital and annual costs – possibly Community Development (up to 25K), recreation commission
• Provincial and Joint infrastructure Programs – Community, Culture, and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) 100K-millions
• Federal Funding: Canada Community Building Fund (Federal funds to be transferred to local gov for “sports infrastructure”)
• BC Community Gaming Grants ( Capitol Projects Stream): up to 250K
• Co-op Community Spaces (up to 150K)
• BCAA Play Here Grant (up to 100K)
• NHL/NHLPA Goals & Dreams Fund (up to 25K)
• Eagles Club – expressed interest to help raise funds
• Lion’s Club – possibility to help raise funds
• Parks funding? 60M?

We are not asking for any funding (although we would happily accept that!), we are asking for continued support via conversation to make this project a reality.

If we do not change something we will not be able to provide a rink for many more years due to temps.
