Class: VIII

2 of 9

AIR POLLUTION

  • The presence of one or more contaminants in the atmosphere which are injurious to human health, animal and plant life.

3 of 9

MAJOR POLLUTANTS

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Suspended Particulate Matter
  • Chlorofluorocarbons
  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Sulphur dioxide
  • Ozone

4 of 9

SMOG

  • Caused by Industrial and Vehicular pollution.
  • Can cause respiratory diseases ,eye- irritation and even death.

5 of 9

INDUSTRIAL SMOKESTACKS

  • Carbon dioxide , sulphur dioxide and other contaminants present in let-out gases cause Global warming and Acid rain .

6 of 9

VEHICLE EXHAUST

  • Unburnt hydrocarbons, oxides of Nitrogen , sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide cause Greenhouse effect.
  • This leads to Global Warming.

7 of 9

EFFECTS

  • Smoke from factories & cigarettes causes harm to the lungs .
  • Carbon particles get deposited in the lung tissue.
  • This impairs the ability of the Alveoli to exchange gases.

8 of 9

ACID RAIN

  • Oxides of Nitrogen & Sulphur combine with water droplets and form Acids in air.
  • These acids reach the earth’s surface along with Rain .

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

  • Use Renewable sources of energy.
  • Chimneys in factories should be installed with Cottrell precipitators .
  • Use CNG or LPG cylinders in vehicles or Unleaded petrol & diesel .
  • Regularly check vehicle for emission .
  • Grow more trees .
