Icebreaker

Clap and Snap

Instructions Time slot : 9.45 am – 10.00 am

​

• Clap is snap, and snap is clap. When the facilitator says clap, participants should snap. When the facilitator says snap, participants should clap.

​

• Repeat this three times. Whoever does a mistake is out.

​

• In round 2, when facilitator says clap, participants should snap and say snap. When facilitator says snap, participants should clap and say clap.

​

Why – To help teachers enhance their knowledge of teaching phonics and

update their skills to use this method appropriately

How – Activity oriented and interactive approach

When – Term 1 – Sounds of all 26 letters, Term 2 – CVC words using short

vowel sounds

To whom – Teachers handling grades 1 - 3

Phonics – Introduction to Letter Sounds

Instructions Time : 10.30 am to 11.30 am

• Play the phonics song video in the given link and follow the instructions below.

• Pause the video after every four letters. Invite four volunteers. Ask them to pick one of the four letter cards.

​

• Each volunteer has to say the sound of the letter and the words beginning with the letter. For example,

/b/…ball… /b/ /b/…. ball

• Say a word starting with the same letter as your name

• Before saying that word, repeat the sound of the first letter twice

Instructions Time : 12.15 pm to 1.00 pm

• The facilitator thinks of any object that is inside the room. For example: Blackboard. Now, the facilitator will announce, “I spy something in this room that starts with the sound /b/” 

​

​

• Participants have to guess the word. One participant may guess it as /b/ /b/ Bag. The facilitator should say no, and this will go on until a participant guesses the correct word and says /b/ /b/ blackboard.

​

​

• Now, the facilitator will have to ask one teacher to come to the front and play the game. The game can be continued until 10 teachers get a chance to come to the front.

CVC words – Introduction to segmenting and blending

What is a CVC word ?

​

​

​

​

• CVC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant

​

​

• A CVC word is a single syllable three-sound word that follows the pattern of consonant

sound, vowel sound, consonant sound.

​

​

• For example, in the CVC word CAT - /C/ is a consonant sound, /A/ is a vowel sound, and /T/ is a consonant sound

CVC words – segmenting and blending – short /a/

Instructions Time : 2.15 pm to 2.45 pm

• Play the video in the following link

• Pause the video at the end of short /a/. Divide participants into four groups. Ask each group to pick a family card

​

• Each group should make CVC words using all the consonant letters with the chosen family that includes sensical and non-sensical words. For example, the group with ‘at’ shall make bat, cat, dat, fat, etc.

​

• Each group should categorise the words into sensical and non-sensical words.

​

• Non-sensical words are included to practise reading

​

CVC words – segmenting and blending – short /e/

Instructions Time : 2.45 pm to 3.15 pm

​

• Resume the video and pause at the end of short /e/

​

​

• Display the following family cards and ask each group to come up with a small chant

​

​

​

​

• For example, a bed

a pen

a pen on the bed

​

CVC words – segmenting and blending – short /i/

Instructions Time : 3.15 to 3.45 pm

​

​

• Resume the video and pause at the end of short /i/

​

​

• Display the following family cards and ask each group to pick a family come up with CVC words of their family

​

​

​

• Each group shall say the words of their family and other groups should find and say the beginning sound of the word. For example, if the group with ‘ig’ family says fig, the others should say the sound /f/.

​

CVC words – Relay story

Instructions Time : 4.00 pm to 4.30 pm

​

​

​

• Resume the video for /o/ and /u/

​

​

• The participants would play Relay story using CVC words in groups

​

​

• Facilitator shall start by saying the first sentence of the story. For example, Sam is an ant.

​

​

• Each group should continue the story by saying a sentence using at least one CVC word in the sentence.

​

​

Instructions Time : 4.30 pm to 4.45 pm

• Work in groups and write as many CVC words as possible

​

​

• The ending sound of the first word should be the beginning sound of next word. For example, pan, nap, pat etc.

​

• After two minutes, each group should read their words by first segmenting and then blending the letter sounds. For example, /p/ /a/ /n/ - pan.

​

​

• Team that writes the maximum words is the winner

​

​
