Microaggressions in Our Lives

Microaggressions are everyday slights, indignities, put-downs, and insults that people of color, women, neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+ populations, and other marginalized people experience in their day-to-day interactions.

ANYONE can be the target of a microaggression.

“Stop being so sensitive.”

Microaggressions can appear to be compliments but often contain a hidden insult to the target group. The insult affects the confidence and well being of the individual insulted.

“I didn’t mean it that way.”

Microaggressions are often outside the level of conscious awareness of the people who say them, which means they can be unintentional.

As you watch, be ready to share:

  1. What is happening here?
  2. What is the underlying message and/or assumption conveyed by the microaggression?
  3. How do you think the target feels?
  4. How can the target (or an ally) respond?
