My Library
A Social Story About the Wolcott Public Library
This is my library.
It is the Wolcott Public Library. This is the front of my library.
I can borrow items from my library.
I can borrow books. I can borrow movies. I can borrow games and puzzles.
We park the car in the parking lot and walk inside. There is a button that will open the doors. Some people push the button, and some people pull the handle to open the door.
I will always walk while I am in the library. It is never okay to run.
This is the main room at my library.
There is a desk, there are library workers. There are computers. People are reading quietly in the library. I will try to use a quiet voice when I am in the library.
Returning books
This is the book return at my library. If I have books to return, I drop them slowly into the book drop.
Bathroom
This is the bathroom at my library. I can walk to the bathroom if I need to go potty. When I go into the bathroom, the lights go on automatically. When I flush the toilet, it is loud. When I am finished, I wash my hands.
This is the K room at my library.
It has pictures of trees, furniture, and books. It has Lego creations. It is okay to look at the Lego creations, but I may not touch them. I will walk through the K room to get to the Children’s Room.
This is the Children’s room at my library.
There are many books. There are tables and chairs. There may be other people in the Children’s Room.
This is the library pet.
The library pet is a Bearded Dragon named bookmark. Bookmark lives in a tank. I can look at Bookmark and talk to her with a quiet voice.
These are the Children’s Librarians at my library.
They might be in the children’s room when I visit. They can help me find books. The Children’s Librarians will answer my questions.
The Children’s Room has many toys.
There is a train table, there are Duplo, and there are Magnatiles. There are many other toys and games.
I can play with the toys [for 15 minutes.] When I am done, I will clean up.
My family’s plan
I will help [Mom] choose books. When we find books we want, we will put them in our bag. When we are done choosing books, we will walk to the circulation desk in the main room.
This is the circulation desk at my library.
It is in the main room. I will try to use my whisper voice when I am in this part of the library. Sometimes, there is a line and I wait for a little while.
There is a library worker behind the desk. I need to show my library card to check-out, or borrow, the books. The library worker will scan the books. There will be a beeping sound. The library worker will give me a due date receipt to remind me when items need to be returned to the library.
I am ready to go home.
I will come back to the library when it is time to return the items I checked out and find new books.
The End
Bonus pages
We have included some pages about library programs. If you are attending a program, you may wish to include these.
Library programs
Sometimes, there are special programs at the library. Some programs are in the Children’s Room. Some programs are in the meeting room.
This is a meeting room at my library.
It is in the downstairs part of the library. Sometimes, I will go to the meeting room when there is a program. There will be other children and families at the program. The meeting room might be loud. Loud noises can be upsetting. If I feel overwhelmed, I can [use a strategy].
