Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • The reasons for an emergency evacuation of a school bus include:
    • Fire or danger of fire
    • Submersion or Immersion
    • Unsafe bus position
      • Bus is stopped/stalled in the path of a train or adjacent to the railroad tracks
      • The stopped position of the bus may increase the danger of a collision

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • Important factors pertaining to emergency evacuation drills:
    • The safety of the students is most important
    • All evacuation drills should be supervised by the driver preferably
    • When a bus driver is incapacitated the designated student helpers should be authorized to direct theses drills

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • Selected student helpers should be trained to know how to:
    • - Shut off the engine & turn off the ignition
    • - Set the parking brake
    • - Operate emergency exits (manually from door)
    • - Open & close loading doors
    • - Use 2-way radio to communicate with dispatch

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • Selected student helpers should be trained to know how to:
    • Use bus intercom if equipped
    • Help small students off the bus
    • Account for students
    • Set emergency reflectors (last resort only)
    • Summon help when & where needed

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • When selecting student helpers the driver should consider the following:
    • Student maturity
    • Student’s behavior on the bus
    • Student lives toward the end of the route

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • SDE recommends evacuation drill methods be varied using the front & rear doors
  • The driver should be the last person off of the bus during the drills
  • Evacuation drills will be conducted each semester within the first two weeks

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • Students should leave all personal items on the bus during the drill
  • Students should travel to a designated area at least 100-ft away from the bus

Emergency Evacuation Drills

  • Use only the front doors or the rear doors for drills
  • Do not allow students to jump out of the rear doors
  • Be familiar with exits & their operations
