Preface: SUUS - ALET21

Simple steps are often the foundation of success.

At a time where electronics has taken over many of our daily hours and influenced us to less movement, it is important to inform widely about the benefits of an Active Learning Environment.

We live in a time of history, where electronics and social media is a part of our daily life and this is also the prediction for the future. And we have not seen the end of this development.

Can we provide the students with tools to improve both the academic learning and health ?

Tools for Enhancing Academic Learning in Combination with Physical Activity

By integrating personal development tools in an academic context with physical activity and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we can create a holistic approach to learning, where physical, psychological, and cognitive factors support academic performance.

Preface: SUUS - ALET21 — Tools for Enhancing Academic Learning in Combination with Physical Activity

Safety Needs

(Structure and Balance Between Physical and Academic Development)

Students need stability and predictability to perform optimally. ( Peak Performance theory by SUUS/ALET21 )

Tools:

Time management:

A structured timetable with fixed modules for academic study and training (SUUS/ALET21).

Routines:

Integrating physical activity into daily life as a predictable part of the study plan (SUUS/ALET21).

Mindfulness and stress management

through physical exercises—both in scheduled physical activity and within the general curriculum (Exorlive). Remember tools for special needs section.

Social Needs

(Community, Collaboration, and Peer Learning)

Physical activities can strengthen social bonds, which support learning.

Tools:

Study groups/teams with physical activity

(SUUS/ALET21).

Team sports and academic collaboration:

Athletes develop strategic thinking, teamwork, and communication, which also strengthen academic success. (SUUS/ALET21).

There are many students who do not have a place to go

—we can help them find their way! (SUUS/ALET21).

Esteem Needs in dependent order:

(Self-Confidence, Self Esteem, Self-Discipline and Academic Achievement)

The combination of physical and academic development can boost motivation and self-belief.

Tools:

Growth mindset (Carol Dweck):

In both sports and studies, students learn that effort and strategy lead to improvement (SUUS/ALET21).

Self-regulated learning (Zimmerman's model):

Setting goals, monitoring progress, and adjusting efforts—applies to both academic studies and training (SUUS/ALET21).

Self-Actualization

(Personal Development and Lifelong Learning)

The ultimate combination of physical activity and academic learning leads to personal growth and self-actualization (SUUS/ALET21).

Conclusion

By connecting Maslow's hierarchy of needs with physical and academic development tools like SUUS/ALET21, we create a strong framework for holistic learning. Physical activity is not just a health benefit—it is an integral part of an effective learning process that optimizes cognition, mental well-being, and social interaction, ultimately leading to improved academic performance.

But SUUS/ALET21 DEVELOPS MUCH MORE THAN THIS!

Preface: SUUS - ALET21

Physical training has a range of positive effects on academic learning.

Here are some of the most important ways in which physical activity supports cognitive and academic skills:

Improved cognitive function

– Exercise increases blood circulation to the brain, enhancing memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities.

Increased attention and focus

– Regular physical activity improves the ability to maintain focus and concentration over extended periods, which is crucial for learning.

Enhanced memory and learning ability

– Physical activity stimulates the production of neurotransmitters and growth factors such as BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which supports brain plasticity and improves long-term memory.

Reduced stress and anxiety

– Exercise helps regulate stress hormones like cortisol and increases the production of endorphins, creating a better learning environment and boosting motivation.

Improved self-discipline and responsibility

– physical training/activity requires structure, goal orientation, and discipline, which can be transferred to academic studies.

Increased social interaction and teamwork skills

– Participation in physical activities develops communication, teamwork, and social skills that are also valuable in academic settings.

Better sleep quality

– Physical training improves sleep quality, which is essential for cognitive recovery and learning.

How do we at Kløvermarkskolen implement SUUS

Active Learning Environment Towards 21st Century · 11

12 of 28

SUUS, the Health Concept from Kløvermarkskolen in Denmark called ALET21 internationally, has 12 years of experience implementing health and physical activity into school schedule and the classroom. To improve the academic learning environment in educational institutions. More than 3500 students have been successful with the concept since the beginning.

In children and adolescents, physical activity confers benefits for the following health outcomes:

1.

Improved physical fitness (cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness)

2.

Cardiometabolic health (blood pressure, dyslipidemia, glucose, and insulin resistance)

3.

Bone health

4.

Cognitive outcomes (academic performance, executive function)

5.

Mental health (reduced symptoms of depression and negative self-confidence and self-esteem feelings)

Sedentary behavior:

Recent research confirms the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Studies have now consistently demonstrated that leading a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to:

1.

Obesity

2.

Type 2 diabetes

3.

Some types of cancer

4.

Cardiovascular diseases

Therefore it is more important than ever and as early as possible, to provide students with knowledge and tools to motivate to a healthy lifestyle with simple and effective exercises.

Sedentary behavior: Insufficient physical activity leads to an estimated economic expenditure:

OECD and WHO estimates that physical inactivity costs EU countries more than €20 billion annually in healthcare.

WHO reports that 84.5% of Greek adolescents aged 11–17 were insufficiently physically active.

A 2024 Greek survey found that only 20.6% of adolescents aged 15–17 exercised for at least one hour every day.

€131 million per year in 2019, according to the Greek Physical Activity Monitor, based on the Ding et al. methodology. The estimated cumulative cost for 2000–2019 was €2.2 billion.

In 2025, the OECD reported that 40% of adults in Greece did not perform sufficient physical activity.

OECD/WHO estimate that meeting physical-activity guidelines across Europe could reduce healthcare expenditure by about €8 billion per year, but this is not a Greece-specific 2025 figure

Holistic approach to education

prepares students for academic and life challenges. Key principles include self-discovery, healthy relationships and social skills, emotional intelligence, resilience, and an appreciation for beauty, transcendence, and truth.

A holistic approach refers to considering the whole system rather than focusing on individual components. In education, this means addressing not only academic achievement but also social, emotional, physical, and psychological development. A holistic approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of all aspects of a student's life and well-being, aiming for comprehensive growth and long-term success.

Peer teaching

promotes collaboration and social learning by encouraging peer-to-peer interactions, fostering empathy and understanding, enhancing teamwork skills, improving communication skills, and promoting peer mentoring.
