The Night We Learned about Dia De Muertos

Welcome

We are glad you stopped in to learn about Dia De Muertos. We hope you enjoy our taleโ€ฆ.

What is the Day of the Dead?

๏ฟฝ

Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahual people who considered mourning the dead disrespectful.. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere.

Altars are usually decorated with flowers, candles, pan de muerto, ceramic skulls, and most importantly pictures of loved ones. Food placed on the altar consists of the loved ones favorite dishes and treats. Drinks should be placed in the altar to quench the thirst of the dead after their long journey back home.

๏ฟฝ

Even though not all families choose to honor their loved ones at the graveyard itself, the tradition of cleaning the grave is still respected by most. This task usually includes tidying the area surrounding the headstone, but being sure to leave behind the aforementioned cempasรบchil flowers. A complete altar is often constructed there, too. Graveyards during the Day of the Dead celebrations, contrary to what you might expect, actually take on the atmosphere of (surprisingly festive) social gatherings.

Adventures Abroad

It was a sunny afternoon at Plaza de Central in Mexico City. A group of friends had traveled together for the celebration. They were all together enjoying the Dia de los Muertos parade through the plaza.

7 of 54

The crowds were full of people cheering. People were standing shoulder to shoulder with barely enough room to breathe.

Overhead, clouds began to form and the sky began to darken.

8 of 54

All of a sudden, there is a loud crash of thunder and a bright, light! BOOM!

All went blank and quiet...

Adventure 1

Our adventure took us to the other side...not the dark side, but the side of light, remembrance, and celebration. We didnโ€™t look like ourselves, but we resembled those who had been lost. Our skin had disappeared and all that was left was bones and the clothes we last wore. We spoke to individuals from all over Central Mexico, some simple folk who shared their family traditions and others who shared their success of fame. We even saw abuelitas and tias getting after their loved ones, even though they didnโ€™t know it. We were immersed in the world of the souls who once lived.

Adventure 3- The Garden

b

Suddenly, we found ourselves in a garden. We were surrounded by flowers, vegetables, and plants of every kind imaginable. This garden was different, however, and everything seemed over-sized. As we wandered through the flower beds we realized that the plants werenโ€™t huge-- we were tiny. Somehow we had

shrunk to the size of ants!

Adventure 3

All around us these now giant people were picking beautiful flowers of all types and colors. These flowers were being gathered into baskets for decorating the graves and alters of loved ones who had passed away. It was amazing to see how much care was being taken in creating these elaborate displays.

The Garden Cont.

I I found the beautiful giants of the gardens that were being prepared for this blessed holiday overwhelming and the smells intoxicating. I worried as the flowers were carefully being picked that I may get crushed or taken with the flowers...when suddenly there was loud rustle , my vision

blurred, and the smells turned from floral to sugary sweet...

We run down a dark, side alley and see Grandmaโ€™s house. We always felt safe at Grandmaโ€™s. She passed away a few years ago, but we decide to go into the house anyways.

When we open the door and wander into the house; we hear a creaking sound. When we investigate, we see Grandma peacefully sitting, rocking in her rocking chair. She begins to speak, giving us a warning.

This means that you can:

  • Resize them without losing quality.
  • Change fill color and opacity.

Isnโ€™t that nice? :)
