Other Notes

Ground Rules

  • Home Plate umpire will cover the ground rules in the pre-game coaches meeting.
  • Get to field early. Discuss ground rules with home team coach while filling out paperwork.

Run Rule

  • 15 after 4 or 3 ½ if home team ahead.
  • 10 after 5 or 4 ½ if home team ahead.

Weather

  • Wait 30 minutes after last lightning strike or thunder.

Umpires

  • Look professional.
  • Consider adding at least one new piece of clothing whether it’s a new hat, a new shirt, new pants, belt, shoes, etc.

  • Softball is moving towards NCAA mechanics
  • Print ID Card or take picture with your phone
  • Mechanics Book replaces Case Book
  • Enter schedule on Arbiter website and keep updated – This is needed to be considered for the State Tournament

  • Be careful with social media
  • If you are state tournament eligible you will receive an e-mail from the MSHSL to apply for the state tournament
  • Training videos will be required to be watched in order to be considered for the state tournament
  • State tournament umpires will be required to view a PowerPoint on 3-person mechanics – there will be no quiz
  • Go to Arbiter MSHSL Central Hub website and click on Softball under the MSHSL Sports section for softball forms and Resources

Other Notes

Less Experienced Umpires:

  • Introduce yourself to varsity umpires before the game if possible.
  • Don’t be afraid to watch the end of the varsity game if your game finishes before the varsity game.
  • Ask questions between innings or after varsity game.

Varsity Umpires

  • Please take the time to answer any questions for fellow umpires.
