Equitable, Transformative Resources

Affirming and Empowering Communities

ACPS will facilitate learning experiences grounded in high expectations, networks of care, and student curiosity to ensure academic and social-emotional development for all students while eliminating opportunity, access, and achievement gaps.

ACPS commits to developing a culturally-responsive environment that will respect and champion the diversity of life experiences of all stakeholders and supports the physical and mental health of our students, staff, and families so they are actively empowered to engage in our school community.

ACPS will attract, develop, and retain the highest quality staff; develop sustainable and modern facilities, infrastructure, and equipment; and distribute all resources in an equitable manner to transform learning experiences and opportunities.

CATEC - what happened? Are acps students at risk of not being able to continue?

  • Charlottesville City Public Schools is buying out Albemarle County Public Schools half of CATEC, and the CATEC Board will dissolve.
  • Charlottesville will take ownership of the facility as of July 2024 at the earliest.
  • ACPS will pay tuition for students to attend, which will be a reduced expenditure annually.
  • Albemarle County approved funding for a center for ACPS that may open as soon as 2025, but more likely 2026. In addition to that funding, we will have additional funding from selling our half of CATEC.
  • We do not plan to replicate programs at CATEC, and we will offer technical trades as well as advanced technical programming. Opportunities for students in both localities will expand.

Audit - what is the status & timeline? For parents who are interested in providing feedback directly to consulting team, how and who to contact?

  • Our audit partner has been selected: Bellwether Education Partners
  • The audit will be conducted in March and April with a report of findings to the School Board most likely on May 25th.
  • For parents who are interested in providing feedback directly to Bellwether, two options:
    • There will be 15 focus group opportunities (contact Jamie Gellner if you are interested).
    • If you have specific input you would like to provide in writing, email it to Jamie to load into the Google Drive / data container for Bellwether

Budget - we look forward to listening to the budget presentations. How can parent leaders most effectively support acps during this next phase of the process?

  • The draft funding request notebook will be available at the ACPS Budget Development page after the presentation tomorrow night.
  • I encourage parent council members to attend or listen in via the stream.
  • We will get started at 6:30. There is are no opening activities.
  • I do not think you will be surprised by anything in the draft funding request.
  • The presentation will be followed by the Board’s first worksession to go into more details on revenues and expenditures.
  • The best way to support ACPS is to use facts from our budget documents. Ask questions about things you want to know more about by emailing Maya at mkumazawa@k12albemarle.org. We keep a running record of questions and answers.
