Tectonic Plates

  • Earth’s lithosphere is broken into tectonic plates.

  • The way these plates move relative to each other determines how the plate boundary affects Earth’s surface because different land structures will form at different plate boundaries.

Formation of Convergent Plate Boundaries (Part 1)

  • Convection cells rotating toward each other form next to each other in the mantle under Earth’s lithosphere.
  • The plates floating on top of these convection cells move toward from each other and collide.

Three types of Convergent Boundaries Exist…

  • This type of convergent boundary forms a subduction zone where the denser lithosphere (oceanic lithosphere) subducts under the less dense lithosphere (continental lithosphere) (red circle)
  • This type of convergent boundary also forms deep ocean trenches and coastal volcanic mountain ranges. (Yellow circles)
  • This type of convergent boundary forms mountain ranges. (blue circle in the picture)
  • This type of convergent boundary forms a subduction zone where the denser oceanic lithosphere subducts under the less dense oceanic (red circle)

  • This type of convergent boundary also forms deep ocean trenches and island arcs.

Top Third: Draw the three types of convergent plate boundaries. Label these parts in your drawings: mantle, oceanic plates, continental plates, convection cells, subduction zone, deep ocean trench, mountains, coastal volcanic mountain range, island arc and arrows showing the direction that the plates are moving.

Middle Third: Sequence the formation of an oceanic plate and continental plate convergent boundary in a flow map.

Bottom Third: Write a summary that sequences the formation of an oceanic plate and continental plate convergent boundary.
