As you watch the video, think about the behaviors Molly is exhibiting.
WHAT DID YOU IDENTIFY?
MITECS and Computer Science Standards
MITECS
Computer Science
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity
Not your parents’ tech skills
Empowered Learner
Students leverage technology to demonstrate competency in learning goals in a variety of ways
Empowered Learner - Example
Turn & Talk
Which of the items from the previous screen (student choice activities or student goal setting) do you use in your classroom OR do you observe in your building/district?
Digital Citizen
Students recognize rights and responsibilities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected world.
Turn & Talk
In your school, what activities are taking place to help students develop into digital citizens who have a positive impact on others.
Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources to construct knowledge, produce artifacts, and make meaning learning experiences for themselves and others
Knowledge Constructor - Example
Students help local antique shop with mystery artifacts
Turn & Talk
What examples of developing knowledge constructors can you share from your experiences, observations or practice?
Innovative Designer
Students use technologies within the design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, imaginative solutions
Innovative Designer - Example
Objective: To use the design process to rethink the recently built terrace space outside the 4th and 5th grade classrooms.
Define audience: teachers, students, parent volunteers, staff, younger students
Prototyping and Test: Students make a scale model of the terrace/patio that incorporates their design elements, estimate project cost
Share: Students present their model to school administration and PTA, accept additional ideas or constraints, before project moves forward into construction
Turn and Talk
What activities/lessons have you observed, taught, or experienced where students are solving real world problems creatively?
Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to the goals
Computational Thinker
Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technology to develop and test solutions
Computational Thinker - Example
Exit routine by Kindergarten class at Maple Hills Elementary in Renton, WA - They created an algorithm for their exit routine and then debugged it together
Turn & Talk
What activities can you think of that take place in a classroom or school building that could be related to computational thinking?
Global Collaborator
Students utilize technology to make connections with others globally/locally to broaden perspectives and learning
