Adding or Subtracting Fractions

A fraction is composed of 2 pieces:

  • The top is the numerator numerator
  • The bottom is the denominator denominator

If we want to add or subtract fractions we must have the same denominator

Finding a Common Denominator:

Easy way - Multiply the numerator and denominator of one fraction by the denominator of the other:

Now we can add the numerators (tops):

Remember: Never change the denominator (bottom) when adding or subtracting.

Example:

Notice that we have a mixed fraction now.

First we must convert to an improper fraction.

Next we find a common denominator.

Finally, we subtract the numerators to find our final answer.

Multiplying Fractions

When multiplying fractions, we simply multiply the numerator by the numerator and denominator by denominator:
