What is Panopto?

  • A cloud-based video storage and sharing platform like Youtube or Vimeo except for Middlebury only
  • A cross-platform desktop recording tool with basic web-based editing features
  • A learning tool integration (LTI) for embedding videos in Canvas pages, assignments and discussions
  • A learning and feedback tool with advanced features for interactive quizzes, annotations, text and slide indexing, captioning*

Before recording, set up a shared folder that you and your students will access together once videos are uploaded

  1. Sign in to Course Hub: http://courses.middlebury.edu
  2. Click + Resource > “Panopto Resource”
    1. course folder, so instructor can upload videos to the cloud and share in Canvas or link out to students.
    2. **Note, content in a class folder is visible to students from Hub

  • My Folder - only owner can view videos unless sharing settings changed
  • Browse - Search for folders or videos you have access to
  • Folder Name - Course Hub named folder with course ID
  • Create - new project, folder, upload
  • Folder Settings - Manage and troubleshoot access to videos in a folder. All videos in a folder will inherit the sharing settings of the “parent” folder

  • Manage class videos within main class folder
  • Permissions extend to sub-folders
  • “Assignment Folder” - �An assignment folder is a special subfolder that allows users that can view the course folder to create and submit sessions privately. As a creator for this folder, you can see and control all content submitted to the assignment folder.

  1. Choose Folder - where video will be uploaded when completed
  2. Session Name - Video title (can be changed later)
  3. Primary Source - Activate / Deactivate video and audio sources
  4. Slides - check* if recording with slides to index them
  5. Secondary Source - activate if recording animations, embedded videos, demonstrations on screen
  6. Record - start your recording

According to Panopto documentation, there are a series of “hotkeys” that help with functions like pausing, starting, and stopping recorder while in another window.

  • Ok to build in Google Slides and screen record your browser
  • Powerpoint or Keynote for demo videos
  • Use slide headings - these can be indexed for search with the “Record PPT” or Record “Keynote” option turned on
  • Make fonts size 24 or higher to improve legibility on different devices
  • Use large images if possible. Details difficult read with small images.
  • Choose minimally-styled graphics to account for small screen viewing
  • Use high contrast templates

Some recommendations for preparing slide content

  1. Open Powerpoint presentation file
  2. Ensure you are signed into Panopto
  3. Click “Create New Recording”
  4. Check your Panopto recorder settings
  5. Primary source: video (optional), audio (required)
  6. Secondary 1 source: Built-in-Display (will record entire screen)
  7. When ready, click RECORD, then put presentation into “Present mode” full screen and start speaking.
  8. Use “hotkeys”, or press ESCAPE to return to the recorder, press PAUSE or STOP
  9. After clicking STOP, Panopto recorder will start processing the video for upload to designated folder

  2. Upload other videos from desktop
  3. Record video - this will launch the Panopto Desktop recorder

  • From Panopto “external tool”, select the Panopto folder where your content is located - this is likely the course folder you created; videos should be in a folder that your students have access to
  • Select video to embed
