Desert Storm- The first major international crisis of the new decade was the invasion of Kuwait on August 1990 by Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq. Kuwait was a major supplier of American oil and the invasion endangered reserves and America's ally Saudi Arabia. The ground war began in Kuwait on February 24 American troops liberated Kuwait in just 100 hours. This was a major victory for America and it established the "new world order".

Soviet Union Fell- In December of 1991 the soviet union dissolved into 15 different countries and it was seen as a triumph of the Western world over communism. America's greatest adversary fell and with it the international community altered drastically. America became the dominant superpower without any formidable competitors. America has maintained itself as the the supreme world power with challengers only showing themselves recently.

The Euro- The Euro was created in 1999 and it had been sought after since the 1960's. The Euro helped stabilize the economies of the various nations of Europe. By having a common currency the nations of Europe could effectively trade, invest and travel. The Euro effectively consolidated the many economies in Europe into a collective market.The Euro is now the second most traded currency and has the highest combined value of banknotes and coins in the world

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. In his 20's he became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement. From then on he directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against South African government and its racist policies. In 1993, Mandela and the South African President F.W. de Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to dismantle the apartheid system. In 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as the first black president of South Africa.

Oklahoma Bombing
At 9:02 a.m. on April 19, 1995, a rental truck filled with explosives was detonated in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. The bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh was pulled over an hour after the bombing for a traffic violation and then arrested for unlawfully carrying a handgun. His accomplice Terry Nicols surrendered in Herrington, Kansas that same day. The explosion blew off the north wall of the building killing 168 people. 19 of them were children attending the building's day care center. This terrorist attack was the worst in American history until the 9/ll attacks.

OJ Simpson- In 1994 OJ Simpson was tried before a court for two counts of murder. The victims were his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman. The case is considered one of the most publicized cases in American history. Simpson was eventually acquitted of all charges eight months later. Before his trial OJ sent the LAPD on a mass chase in his Ford Bronco. The chase was shown on tv and received a great deal of media attention.

LA Riots- After the beating of Rodney King riots and mass looting occurred in Los Angeles. Police officers were filmed beating Rodney King on camera but were not charged with any crimes. The riots lasted in Los Angeles for six days. Looting, arson, and murder occurred during the riots. An estimated one billion dollars in damages were caused by the riots.

Lewinsky scandal- The scandal was a major blow to the Clinton administration in 1998-1999. Clinton was questioned if he had an affair with Monica, the President lied under oath. Eventually it came out that Clinton did have an affair with Monica and he was impeached by the House of Representatives but was acquitted by the Senate.

NAFTA
The North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented on January 1, 1994 in order to remove a majority of the barriers to trade and investment among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Under NAFTA, all non - tariff barriers to agricultural trade between Canada, the United States, and Mexico were eliminated.

George H W Bush- Bush won the election in 1989 and was president until 1992. He had been the Vice President for 8 years and the head of the CIA before that. Bush was limited by a large deficit and a Democratic controlled Congress so his administration did not enact broad reforms in terms of the economy. His administration did pass the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Clean Air Act Amendments. One of the largest achievements of his presidency was the American liberation of Kuwait. When reelection came in 1992 Bush lost because he did not make an effective effort to fix the economy that had been in decline because of Reagan's policies.

Clinton- In 1992 Clinton won the election against Bush because of the economic downturn caused by the major deficit that Reagan created. Clinton promised job growth and a reduction in the national debt to alleviate the economic downturn caused by the stock market decline and soaring oil prices. Clinton sought to reform in a variety of ways but ultimately the scandals that plagued his second term prevented him from doing so.

Newt Gingrich- During President Clinton's administration there was a growing support for the Republican party because of Clinton's failure to be a "New Democrat". Gingrich and his supporters created the Contract with America which enabled the Republicans to take control of the House and to filibuster Clinton.

Michael Jordan- Jordan is widely regarded as the best basketball player of all time. During the 1990s Jordan retired and returned to the NBA to win another three championships. During the 90s he won a total of 6 championships

Steve Jobs- During the 1990s the personal computer was becoming more and more prevalent in the American household. Jobs was the CEO of Apple and he helped popularize computers and caused Apple to become an extremely successful company.

Princess Diana- During the 1990's Diana was a major cultural figure that the whole world saw as a role model. In 1997 she was died in a car accident. There was a massive funeral and outcry because of her death. Thousands of memorials were held and million of people watched her funeral cermony. Her death was a major blow to many people.

Cell Phone- The decade of the phone was now changing, it was stepping away from it's more primitive form. There were two huge innovations during the 90's:
Cell phones started to use calculators, email, and address books. The computerized aspect became increasingly popular.
An in 1999 a Canadian Company created the Blackberry which allowed people fast access to the web and email. The stage for smart phones was forever set!

Hubble Telescope:
It was put into orbit in 1990 by a space shuttle, and up to this day, it is still working. Because it is outside the Earth's atmosphere, it is able to take high quality images with almost no background light. A lot of the observations through Hubble have led to numerous breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as determining the rate of expansion of the universe.

Grunge music is a subgenre of Alternative music and is generally characterized by heavy distorted electric guitar, contrasting song dynamics and apathetic or angst filled lyrics.
Nirvana was one of the biggest players in the industry. Their song Nevermind beat out Michael Jackson's Dangerous for top spot.
Pearl Jam was another big player in the industry. Many Grunge artist were unhappy with their success and popularity though and soon the popularity of it began to decline.

Boy Bands exploded onto the scene in the 90's. In 1997 pop bands formed like BackStreet boys, N'Sync, Hanson, 98 Degrees and they quickly dominated the market. Backstreet Boys became the best selling boyband of all time.

The production of this film began in 1995 and was the most expensive film ever made at the time of its release in 1997. Out of the 14 nominations for Academy Awards, it won 11. The Titanic is the first film to break the billion-dollar mark with a worldwide gross of $1.84 billion.

The production began in 1993 and was released in 1995 by Pixar as an animated family-friendly film. It became an instant hit in not only in children, but in adults as well. Some of the toys used in the movie were toys that many of the baby boomers could relate to, like the GI Joes, Slinkys, and Mr. Potato Heads.

The 1990's were in the midst of the "steroids era," where baseball players were believed to have used these performance-enhancing drugs. The use of steroids was banned in 1991, but the league didn't enforce PED testing. In the 1990s, there was an increase in offensive output because more and more players would begin to use steroids often.
