Cultural Journey

Let's get to know what another!

Create a non-linguistic representation (drawing or collage) of the events that have created who you are as a cultural person;

  • either hand drawn or
  • with a technical logical tool such as the google jamboard

Instructions: Consider the following questions as you think about your Cultural journey to become who you are now as a student or a person in general (as a professional?)

  1. Growing up, what was the communication in your family like?
  2. How did your family teach you to deal with conflict?
  3. Consider the type of community in which you were raised? How do you think this place/geography impacted your cultural values?
  4. What values did you learn from your educational experiences? What were the dominant cultural frameworks used?
  5. What other occurrences or factors in your life that have impacted how you think about time, the way you process information, or who is responsible for success or failure?

Now, create a non-linguistic representation of your cultural journey by drawing or creating a digital collage of images. It can have "some" words but should have more images than words. Try to have up to 15 symbols that represent your answers to the questions above. Be sure to include important influences that have taught you the core values that you still carry with you as and adult/as a student.

After you have completed your drawing or digital collage, post it as a pdf, jpeg, or image that we all can see in this discussion thread, however, provide a caption or "brief" description so that people know what they are looking at and why you chose some of your images.

Here's an example of mine:

This collage gives a glimpse of what has shaped my life. I am an Irish/Polish/American woman. I grew up in a very diverse, lower middle class neighborhood. My childhood was filled with fear, yelling, hiding and abuse. I learned at a young age that communication meant either yelling or silence. I found solace in reading and school. As a young, single parent, I went to school to become a Medical Assistant. I am now able to help people who need help or may have experienced what I did as a child. As an adult, I found my Christian faith and it has guided me through my adult life. All of the things in this picture created the woman I am today. Even though there were many unfortunate experiences, I would not be me without them.

This is my journey as a military child. I went through some abuse and have a mother who suffers from a mental health disorder. This then changed as I turned my life around worked my butt off stayed strong and meet someone who changed my life and changed my values
