Lesson 3

Step by step instructions using computer programing

2 of 8

Step by step peanut butter and jelly sandwich instructions

  1. We will have the students write out on a piece of paper every single instruction in a numbered order that they think is needed to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from start to finish.

3 of 8

Teacher example

  1. Gather your ingredients for the sandwich
    1. Peanut butter
    2. Jelly
    3. Plate
    4. Knife
  2. Pull out 2 slices of bread
    • Lay them side by side on a plate
  3. Open peanut butter and jelly
    • Remove any added seals
    • Stir peanut butter
  4. Take your knife with your hand and put it into the peanut butter
    • Using your knife scrape the edges of the inside of the peanut butter jar and gently spread the peanut butter onto one slice of spread
  5. Repeat step 4 but with jelly instead of peanut butter
  6. Take one slice of bread and combine it by putting it on top of the other one with the peanut butter side going onto the jelly side
  7. Clean up your mess and enjoy!

Showcasing how well their instructions work

  • As a teacher we would then showcase how their individual instructions are flawed because with no prior knowledge some simple instructions might be assumed and not told. (for instance open the jelly bottle)

Explain how it relates to computers and how they take instructions at face value

This is a good introduction into coding as it explains to the students how because these computers have no prior knowledge they don't and won't do something that they aren't told.

Names

Now we will try this assignment again. However this time instead of trying to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich we will be trying to make their own initials.

7 of 8

Teacher example

  1. Start by grabbing a pen or pencil and a piece of paper
  2. Then grab the pencil and place it gently on the piece of paper
  3. Start by going up slightly then while moving to the left lightly and slowly moving centimeters at a time go up and then down in a curved way then on the way down start curving back in and up ending parallel to where you started
  4. Then lift up your pencil and move over to your right about 2 inches
  5. Put your pencil back down and go up and down with your pencil about a couple centimeters straight
  6. Then lift up your pencil and put it down in the middle of the straight line
  7. In the straight line at an angle make another straght line in a diagonal direction a few centimeters
  8. Lift up your pencil and put it back down at the beginning point of where you drew the first diagonal line
  9. Draw another diagonal line in the opposite way of the first one for a few centimeters
  10. Pick up your pencil
  11. Now hopefully you made a C and a K!

Re explain instructions

Re explain how important it is that these computers have no prior knowledge and no info before they are imputed with code. And because of this they need to remember that when making instructions whether it is for a pb&j or for making their initials that they need to do their best to include every detail no matter how small.
