PROBLEM DEFINITION

Corona Virus is the biggest global pandemic in modern era. It has impacted majority of countries across the globe. After its slow rise, India has also witnessed significant spike in number of people affected by this Virus. As per WHO currently there is no medication/vaccine available to treat this Virus. What is Corona Virus ?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory illnesses in people

The virus spreads similar to the flu by coughing, sneezing and respiratory droplets

Common symptoms include: fever, coughing & shortness of breath

Symptoms are present 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus

People are thought to be the most contagious when they are symptomatic

14 of 51

How does the virus spread?

14

  • Primarily spreads person-to-person via respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes (like the flu)
  • Possibly spreads by touching an object or surface with the

virus on it, then touching mouth, nose, or eyes

  • Possibly spreads through stool with the virus in it
  • It takes approximately 2 to 14 days (median ~5 days) for

an infected person to show symptoms

  • People are likely to be most infectious while they are most

symptomatic (e.g., coughing and sneezing)

o Spreading of the Virus from people without symptoms is possible

Risk Factors and Severity

15

  • People with COVID-19 can have no symptoms or develop mild, severe, or fatal illness

  • Kids may have less severe disease (2% of confirmed

cases in China occurred among those <20 years old)

  • Globally, current case fatality rate ~6% among those with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19

  • Risk factors for severe illness may include:
    • Older age
    • Underlying chronic medical conditions
