TEAM BUILDING AND TEAM CULTURE
BUILDING YOUR TEAM
MAKE IT A CLASS
Check for interest in a class.
Is there anything at your school that already fills the needs?
Is there anyone available to teach it?
FEEDER SCHOOLS
Look for potential feeder schools
Speak to teachers in similar subjects
Consider a middle school tournament
SPEAK TO YOUR COUNSELORS
Make sure they know what you do and what speech team is.
Arrange to speak with incoming freshman
Volunteer to help when you can (keep yourself on their radar)
USE CURRENT MEMBERS AS RECRUITERS
Your team is one of your greatest resources.
Encourage them to look for students that would be a good fit for the team
TEAM CULTURE
CELEBRATE YOUR WINS
No win is too big, no win is too small
Get it on your morning announcements
See if the local paper will post pictures from tournament wins
AWARD PINS FROM NSDA
Start with a qualifying number of NSDA points
Rotate out pins until student graduates
TEAM LEADERS
Consider adding team leadership
Give them a title:
President
Captain
Arch-Duke
KNOW YOUR TEAM
Speak with them about more than speech
Find out what else they are involved in beyond speech
Don’t be afraid to share your world with them
DO ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF SPEECH
CREATE TRADITIONS
