Research Design

  • The term research design is widely used in education, yet it takes on different meanings in different studies.
  • For example, in one study, research design may reflect the entire research process, from conceptualising a problem to the literature review, research questions, methods, and conclusions. In contrast, in another study, research design refers only to the methodology of a study (e.g., data collection and analysis).

  • Identifying a study’s research design is important because it communicates information about key features of the study, which can differ for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.
  • Crotty (1998) described four key features to consider in research design: the epistemology that informs the research, the philosophical stance underlying the methodology in question (e.g., post-positivism, constructivism, pragmatism, advocacy/participatory; Morgan, 2007), the methodology itself, and the techniques and procedures used in the research design to collect data.

The design of any research study would depend on the type of information the researcher wants to uncover. There are different types of qualitative research designs;
