Web Literacy”

Strategic Planning - Core Working Team

Q2 2015

2 of 11

Last December, we committed to…

  • Crafting an ambitious learning and community strategy

  • Develop the next iteration of our Web Literacy thinking

  • Our goal: Build a shared definition of what it means to be read, write and participate in the digital world.

Mark’s recent blog post on Web Literacy: https://commonspace.wordpress.com/2015/06/03/the-essence-of-web-literacy/

What we are doing

  • Forming this core working group — synthesis our work in context to aligned thinking, meet in person, meet regular, craft useful documentation

  • To get to a shared definition of Web literacy, we should:
    • Craft a simple and spreadable definition of…
    • Pressure test definitions and language…
    • Look at what we like about current version of the Web Literacy Map
    • Look at patterns and overlap with other frameworks for digital skills
      • e.g. How does the linked learning network define 21st Century skills
    • Plan changes for getting to Web Literacy 2.0
      • …and how it underpins Mozilla Academy thinking
    • Engage with a broad set of people connected and invested in the work
    • Design and launch pilots and prototypes that make Web Literacy real

Where do we want to land?

  • Programs, partners and staff have a shared vision and understanding for what Mozilla means by Web Literacy

  • Web literacy is a Magnetic shared brand and agenda that draws people/partners people to the cause

  • We can attract new investments with evidence of the impact (collectively and individually) of programs that grow Web Literacy for participants

  • Make life easier on fundraising, marketing and product — shared understanding of language, research, copy and assets

  • Lead by example on how teach and learn web literacy

  • Leading, guiding and shaping a broad coalition aligned to web Literacy as essential skills

What we know

  • When we are clear and inspirational about Web Literacy people love it and take action

  • Mozilla’s work on Web Literacy has traction even while in drafting phase

  • Gives theoretical competency framework to experiential and connected learning tied to communities of practice

  • We can get to rigorous practical applications faster then most

  • Mozilla expected to match Web Literacy to badges and assessment

We can get to practical application faster then most, with rigor

What we don’t know

  • What is the poetical/rhetorical explanation that could go viral

  • What are the packages people expect to have access to that helps R/W/P

  • If being Web Literate unlocks academic, career opportunities, lifelong learning & upward mobility?

  • If/How badges can be used to validate Web Literacy across projects, programs, networks and systems

  • We don’t know how to do:

1. Individually measure level of web literacy

2. Collectively measure levels of web literacy

3.Content strategy — what do we create and package for others to join our agenda

What we need in a Web Literacy strategy

  • a simple definition of Web Literacy

  • …that underpins all of Mozilla’s top line org goals and strategies

  • incorporates what we’ve learned as effective from our own and other’s existing new literacies framework and research

  • …and tees up a roadmap for creating common structure for building teaching and learning experiences with Mozilla

  • …shared curricular format that bind Mozilla Learning activities
