It is a globally used app, with 46% of users coming from India, 23% from the United States, 2% from Canada, the United Kingdom accounting for 1.55%, the Philippines accounting for 1.5%, and the remaining 25% from other countries.
Why solve this problem?
Breaking down the problem:
Analyzing the problem
Outcome Problem solution
Active users can be defined as registered users who had at least one active session in which they performed an activity like searching for a diet, reading a blog, logging calories, etc. on the HealthifyMe app or website.
Registered users who just opened the app and left should not be considered active, as they could have opened it by mistake.
Churned users can be defined as users who have been inactive for the last 3 months.
#Users= #Active Users + #Churned Users
#Registered User= #Visitors * (1-Bounce rate) * Registration %
#Active Users= #Registered Free users + # Registered subscribed users
#Revenue= #Users * #Average revenue per user
#Monthly active users= Unique users who had an active session in the last 30 days
Number of active users are crucial for any fitness app or subscription based business to generate revenue
India has more than 58 million fitness app user and globally 71% of fitness app users abandon the app by month 3 according to the research
From survey for the project % users said that they are very likely to switch to a new app and one of the main reason to leave the app is “lack of motivation to use the app”
The longer the user stays more likely s/he is to take a pro membership or recommend it to others and inability to retain customers can adversely impact the business: and lead to decreased revenue..
Although users are satisfied with the apps they use and agree that they helped them reach their goals they still stop using the app in a few months
The main reason users stopped using the app, according to user interviews and surveys, was a lack of motivation to use it and participate in offline activities such as gym, zumba, working out with friends, and so on.
Once users learned about the diet and exercise routine and reached and maintained their desired fitness state or goal, they did not feel like logging their details as they were able to make informed decisions on their own.
Users do want to try the premium features, but they feel that the premium membership amount is too high, and they would rather join a gym, do zumba, or perform activities with friends, unless they have a health condition that needs to be kept in check.

Possible Solutions

Healthify Club
Creating "Healthify Club" offline fitness centres initially in Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai, as they have 58%, 46%, and 42% of people working out 3–4 times a week, respectively, hence better chances of adoption.
The club membership will be blended with access to online training sessions, Healthify Studio, and pro features, giving our members the flexibility to create personalised plans that suit their lifestyle.
A special discount and offer for referrals or bringing a friend can be added, as according to the research paper in the NCBI, this can promote intrinsic motives and goals, such as enjoying social interaction, developing skills, and feeling challenged, which are important for greater exercise participation and hence better retention of those who leave because of a lack of motivation.
Club will attract those who prefer offline membership only and reduce the churn of those who leave the app for offline membership.
This feature will better equip customers and coaches to track the effectiveness of offline recommendations through the app.
Depending on performance and success, the club has a possibility of generating additional revenue from advertising and sponsorship, partnering with other fitness and wellness brands and promoting partner products, or through category expansion in merchandise sales. The company can sell its own branded merchandise through the app or club, such as supplements and mats, or promote partner products.
Health credits
User will earn health credits for completing activities on the app. Activities to earn credits will be generated based on the health condition and fitness goals of the user and alternate activities will also be recommended to maximize participation and inclusion.
Free users will be rewarded for successfully logging calories for meals and sleep, reaching their daily goal of exercise and steps, and engaging with content in the Discover section, including watching a live session, commenting, liking a post, and sharing their experience by post.
Paid users can earn from the above activities and from premium features as well, like if they have a HealtifyMe smart tracker and CGM. Data from these devices can be used to reward users with credits for reaching fitness goals.
Credits allocation will be predefined on the basis of activity difficulty, and users will be able to get only the maximum credit defined; overperforming activities will not fetch credits; however, maintaining a successful streak will fetch additional credits for users.
Weekly challenges, which can be done solo or by challenging friends or family, can have a monthly or yearly global ranking to add a gamification element. Participating in these challenges and completing them will also mean additional weekly and monthly rewards based on global rank. As feeling challenged increases, social elements and a sense of accomplishment lead to increased motivation and participation, as validated by the research study as well. [Research paper]
Health credits can redeemed for consultation with a dietician/coach, access to a premium feature/membership in exchange for credits, or to get a discount, voucher, or gift cards from the partner brands.

Pitfall | Mitigation |
Health Credits could lead to users becoming more focused on earning credits and redeeming them for discounts, vouchers or gift cards from partner brands, rather than focusing on their overall health and well-being. This could lead to users becoming more focused on materialism, rather than on improving their health | Incorporating a feedback loop in the system, where users can rate the rewards and challenges, and the AI-based algorithm can adjust the rewards and challenges based on user feedback can be one possible solution which can be designed working with coaches and dietitians and data scientists for maximum accuracy. |
Cheating the system: some users may try to cheat or game the system to earn more credits, which can be detrimental to the feature's overall effectiveness. | Monitoring user activity and behavior, and implementing fraud detection algorithms to detect and prevent cheating by running automated checks to verify the accuracy of the activity data. Users who are found to be cheating the system will be penalized by credit deduction or banned from participation based on severity to promote good behaviour. |
Inaccurate data: Incorrect or inaccurate data can be provided by users, which can lead to inaccurate information being stored, and may lead to poor recommendations. | Bye use of machine learning algorithms for advanced data validations to check for inconsistencies and errors in the data provided by users. Additionally in-app tutorials and guidance to help users understand how to provide accurate information can also be provided on how to update their information if it changes and in FAQ. |
Why is this feature helpful?
Users
Users will be rewarded for following a healthy lifestyle, and tangible rewards like credits will further motivate users to continue using the app after attaining their goal.
Credits will allow users who cannot afford premium features or consultations or who want to test features before purchasing them to do so.
It will give users a sense of accomplishment as they earn credits, rank higher on the leaderboard, and complete activities.
Redeem credits for vouchers, discount coupons, and gift cards from their favourite brands.
Business
Increased user engagement and more data to understand customer preferences and behaviour to tailor services to user needs or to come up with new services/products.
Partner brand promotions and gift card/voucher purchase from partner brand can increase revenue from business
Future Scope
A potential area for expansion could be integrating the feature with other health and wellness apps, allowing users to earn and redeem credits across multiple platforms.
One interesting use case is partnering with health insurance companies to reward users with lower premiums for staying healthy.
Allow users to transfer credits to their friends and family members as a gift or reward to increase redemption and usage of credits, as these sit on the liability side of the balance sheet and can be reduced with more redemption.
