What does this course cover?

The course explores the history of the fire service and its development into the organization that we know of today.  Students will explore tactics and fireground strategies.  Characteristics and behavior of fire will be discussed.  Numerous fire service subjects including fire hose, tools and equipment, search and rescue situations, ventilation techniques, ropes and knots, and all types of emergency preparedness topics will be covered.

Why should I take this course?

This course provides insight to a career in the fire service. It is also an excellent foundation for people who wish to enroll in the fire academy in the future. This class serves as an elective to the Fire Service Operations AAS degree.

Who is the Instructor?

  • Retired Battalion Chief Mike Grazian
  • 40 years fire service experience
  • Instructor for many fire academy training programs-including MVCC

Will this class involve hands-on training skills?

You will be able to get your hands on many of the items that we discuss such as hoses, nozzles, extinguishers, and various tools. You will NOT enter hazardous environments (burning buildings) and you will NOT be donning gear and performing scenarios.

Dual Enrollment�Overview

  • Earn college credit while still in high school does not guarantee HS credit or HS graduation credit. Discuss with high school counselor.
  • Final grade is part of your permanent college record. 
  • Student must maintain a GPA of a 2.0 to prevent any limitation to their ability to receive financial aid once he/she enters college.
  • Students pay full tuition; they are not eligible for financial aid. Payment plan option – 25% down plus one-time $25 fee; 4 payment increments.
  • Student must provide their own mode of transportation.
  • All college policies apply
  • High school calendar will differ from MVCC calendar

Dual Enrollment: FERPA

  • FERPA = Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974

  • Federal Law regarding the privacy of student educational records and the access provided to these records. Any educational institution that receives funds under any program administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education is bound by FERPA requirements.

​

  • Upon enrollment as a Moraine Valley Dual Enrollment student, Moraine Valley will only communicate with the student regarding their educational records and billing information unless indicated on the High School Authorization form.

Next Steps

  1. Talk to your parents.
  2. Discuss with counselor for approval/planning your senior schedule.
  3. Complete MVCC online admission application.
  4. High School Authorization Forms are due to your counselor by March (For Fall) and October (For Spring).
  5. Tuition letters will be emailed. First payment due in May (For Fall) and December (For Spring).

*Students who do not make a minimum payment by the due date will be dropped from the course and will not be guaranteed a seat in the requested section. Re-registration will be permitted based upon course availability. All students are charged a $25 one time, re-registration fee.
