Threats of Violence Towards Self or Others

when not screened in person

DoDEA Headquarters does not recommend the use of the threat screening tool in a remote learning setting, as it is not designed for safe virtual delivery. As such, to increase transparency and awareness, effective immediately when in-person screening cannot be completed (due to Charlie, quarantine/ROM/isolation, or similar), we recommend all suicidal ideations, suicide attempts, and completions be reported via a Serious Incident Report (SIR).

In addition to standard reporting requirements, SIRs for behavioral threat to self or others when in-person screening cannot be completed, report the level as

“pending” until the level is known and:

1. Identify when the suicidal threat was detected.

2. Identify the physical location of the student and primary caregiver at the time of the threat.

3. Verify that the parents were notified.

4. Identify what non-DoDEA entity the report was referred to (if a referral is required-

AND ask parent to sign the release of information to assist with follow-up when referral is made).

5. Identify what supports and/or interventions were implemented (e.g., student check-ins).
