Why do these notes sound good together?

Pentatonic scales sound good because they remove dissonant notes (the 4th and 7th) from a standard major scale, creating a simpler, more consonant sound with no jarring half-steps, making any combination of notes sound harmonious and perfect for improvisation over chords. This "tension-free" quality, combined with containing essential chord tones, makes them universally pleasing and easy to use in rock, pop, and traditional music worldwide.
