Can you save Fred ?
Fred the worm decided it was a beautiful day to go out on his boat.
Suddenly a big wave came by and tipped Fred’s boat over.
Now Fred is in trouble because his boat has tipped over from the wave. The good news is he is floating on top of the tipped boat. The bad news is Fred wasn’t wearing his life vest and Fred can’t swim.
Fred needs your help. Fred has noticed that his life vest is under the boat. If Fred can get his life vest he can swim to safety. Can you help Fred get his life vest?
In order to get Fred his life vest you have to use the following supplies :
1 Cup
1 Gummy Worm
1 gummy Life Saver
4 Paper Clips
AND….
You cannot touch Fred, the boat, or the life jacket with your hands (only with your paper clips.) As you use the paper clips you may not puncture Fred or the Life Saver.
Remember Fred can’t touch the water (table). Otherwise he will drown and your team will have to start over.
Fred is safe when he has his life vest on and is back on top of the boat wearing his life vest.
Now it’s time to engineer your plan to rescue Fred !
We call this the Engineer Design Process !
Here are the steps:
Step 1 - DEFINE THE PROBLEM
Identify the problem with your partner.
List the constraints.
Step 2 - PLAN A SOLUTION
Brainstorm a solution.
Step 3 - MAKE A MODEL
Draw out your plan to rescue Fred.
List all your materials.
Step 4- TEST THE MODEL
Put your plan in action !
Try it out !
Step 5 - REFLECT/REDESIGN
Now it is time to reflect:
Were you successful in rescuing Fred?
Are there things you would change?
Were there things that worked well ?
