1. Read and Listen--Round One

While you flip the pages, listen to the audible version shared by your teacher as Jason Reynolds reads, For Every One.

After a first listen/read, what are your takeaways? Write what’s on your mind right now after For Every One. Use your digital notebook to record your first thoughts and ideas.

You can write them in:

  • a list (minimum of six jots)
  • Paragraphs (minimum of three)
  • long form (as long as you need past three paragraphs)

3. Reread and Respond

We discussed in class that many of the narrated poems are told in verse form. Then, once in a while there is a drastic form change. Choose one of the following and discuss the significance of the form change and how it adds to the meaning of the poem:

  • Sundays (p. 38)
  • Variedad Musical (p. 41)
  • Confession (p. 47)

4. Compare and Contrast Essay

Choose a poem from Words With Wings and compare/contrast it with the poem, “The Newcomer” from They Call Me Güero.

Visit our Flipgrid to share in one of the following ways:

  • Just off screen, if you prefer not to be on camera, verbally share a few points from your essay.
  • Write your response, holding it up for the camera to film, and read a portion aloud.
  • Read or respond on camera sharing the poem you chose to compare/contrast and your thoughts related to the two poems.
