Math

Important Information:

  • All DCS students take exam online (except for accomodations)
  • Students can use both Desmos and handheld calculators
  • For numeric entry/gridded response, students cannot input mixed numbers, they must change to decimal or improper fraction
  • If student has accommodation to take EOG/EOC paper/pencil, they will not have access to Desmos
  • Field test items also included on all exams

FAQ’s

  • What type of calculators do students use on EOG/EOC?
    • Desmos and/or handheld calc, whatever they have been using in their classroom. Students can use both Desmos and their handheld calculator.
    • Typical calculator used (actual calculator requirements, here):
      • 3rd - 5th: Four-function
      • 6th - 7th: Scientific
      • 8th Grade - High School: Graphing. On the, 8th grade EOG, students will have access to both Desmos scientific and Desmos graphing calculators.

  • What can K-2 students use on their math assessments?
    • Anything! Any manipulative, paper, etc., things they have been regularly using in class, they can use on the assessment (except during mental math exercises). Also, every K-2 student is eligible for read aloud.

  • Can students take EOG/EOC paper pencil?
    • Only if they have an accommodation to do so. If they have an accommodation to take EOG or EOC paper/pencil, the student will not have access to Desmos on the computer, they will only be able to use a handheld calculator.
  • What standards are assessed?
    • Check out the testing specifications on the previous page.
  • Should we teach students how to take a test?
    • We should build in test taking strategies for students into our classroom for all types of tests (not just EOG/EOC). For example, doing a “brain dump” of important information before they begin taking a test.
  • How many field test items are on the test in addition to the graded/operational questions?
    • 3rd - 4th: Has 6 field test items, so 40 operational and 6 field test ?s
    • 5th: Has 8 field test items, so 40 operational and 8 field test ?s
    • 6th - 8th: Has 8 field test items, so 45 operational and 8 field test ?s
    • Math 1 & Math 3: Has 10 field test items, so 50 operational and 10 field test ?s
  • What if a student participates in alternate assessments because of a disability?

K - 2 Math Assessments:

  • Purpose of K - 2 Math Assessments:
    • To provide information about progress of each student for instructional adaptations and early interventions.
    • To provide next-year teachers with information about the status of each of their incoming students.
    • To inform parents about the status of their children relative to grade-level standards at the end of the year.
    • To provide the school and school district information about the achievement status and progress of groups of students in grades K, 1, and 2.
  • Middle of the Year (MOY) Assessment:
    • The MOY is no longer sent from the state, but you are expected to still give tasks by standards throughout the school year for formative assessment. You can do one task at a time when it works within the topics you are teaching. To help with MOY formative assessment, Karen Kennedy has create these documents to assist in collecting and analyzing the data.
