Expectations of Student Teachers

  • Student teach for a minimum of 15 hours/week (minimum of 200 hours/semester)
    • Activities of the cooperating teacher count towards these hours
  • Plan using appropriate curricula and implement interventions across developmental domains and age ranges
  • Participate in IFSP/IEP development and meetings
  • Engage in assessment of young children and compose reports
  • Facilitate a positive learning environment through behavior support
  • Develop relationships with families that honor and engage their culture and values
  • Participate actively as a member of a transdisciplinary team
  • Comply with professional standards and policies of the placement

Expectations of Cooperating Teachers

  • Establish a relationship with open, sensitive, and supportive communication
  • Orient student teacher to the setting & provide information about school/agency policies
  • Model professional knowledge & skill of effective and caring teaching
  • Engage student teachers in planning & all class responsibilities
  • Observe student teachers & provide constructive feedback

Expectations of Mills Supervisors

  • Serve as liaison between placement & Mills college
  • Orient cooperating teachers to expectations
  • Coordinate the initial, middle, and final 3-way meetings
  • Observe student teacher at least 6x/semester (in addition to the 3-way meetings)
    • Meet before the observation to discuss the plan and identify specific areas for feedback
    • Meet immediately following the observation to debrief, share constructive feedback, and suggest strategies
  • Read student weekly journals & provide feedback
