Augmented Reality

This project is about understanding augmented reality space and capturing user's interaction data with Augmented Reality(AR) Apps for further analysis. During our development, we made multiple prototypes to demonstrate this technology’s abilities, built a simple AR App, and stored data in the Unizin Data Platform using Caliper Specification.

Problem

Since augmented reality is an emerging technology, it was challenging for us to learn how to use it. In addition, we also needed to understand what constitutes useful analytics of user interaction data.

Methods

Results

We developed a deep understanding of augmented reality and how analytics can be used to enrich it.

Lessons learned:

  • Rapid prototyping is a good way to find out what works and what to remove from the project.
  • Augmented reality poses a challenge on what analytic solutions can collect because of how different the data is from most use cases.

We started off with learning about Unity and how it interfaces with ARKit, Apple’s SDK for creating augmented reality apps. Once we understood how it worked, we moved on to capturing user interaction data in Caliper specification and sending it to the Unizin Data platform. Since the profiles defined by the Caliper standards didn’t have anything specifically for augmented reality, we needed to customize the Caliper Base profile to meet our needs. We then continued developing our app, adding a feature a week to experiment with the features that augmented reality had.
