Why change?

  • BYOD & Flipping = classroom culture shift
  • More screen time = more face time!
  • No worse for anyone, way better for many
  • Sorry, that wasn’t completely true
  • What blended looks like
  • Just putting tech in students’ hands doesn’t improve outcomes...no kidding!

Playlist Evolution

  • Start small - early playlists looked like this
    • Super quick and easy to create and share
      • Know your keyboard shortcuts!!! Ctrl-k anyone?
    • Too much data, impossible to use effectively
    • Students struggled to track their progress

“The students also did not practice doing math problems wrong. If they did one problem incorrectly they immediately knew it. If they got a second problem incorrect they would ask for help before doing a 3rd problem incorrectly.” -Alice Keeler

Changing Classroom Roles

bit.ly/ISTE2017playlists

My role has changed (and so has my roll). I spend most of each class period working with students one on one or in small groups.

What do the customers think?

What do you like most about working with playlists?

  • I like that I can learn at my own pace and can therefore take time to understand something fully before I move on to the next topic. this class is a move personalized learning environment
  • It's easier to address the teacher about something when you can individually ask them as opposed to being too shy to say anything when they're at the front of the class saying "Questions?"
  • I like how it feels like im one on one with the teacher
  • It gives me the freedom that i did not have in the past and also the responsibility to try out problems on my own and be independent.
  • Taking things at my own paste.
  • I can know what I have to do next and choose what I will do next. It allows me to manage my time in the classroom better. I also like how It provides multiple ways to learn the same thing. This allows me to get extra review in during class and for tests.
  • I love how the class is manageable, comfortable, and organized.
  • The playlist method is new to me, as i have never been taught that way. But, i wish they had been teaching me this way earlier, i enjoy this teaching method very much, it allows me to work at my own pace and not be bored by the conventional, lecture teaching method. I hope that other math teachers will adopt this method so that i can utilize it throughout my high school career.

What do the customers think?

What do you like least about working with playlists?

  • I like having my work in front of me and completing the actual worksheet and having the problems, graphs and models on paper
  • It does provide lessons but I liked being explained to visually.
  • In a real classroom taking notes and having things explained in person is easier than watching a video.

What do the customers think?

If there was one thing you would change about our class, what would it be and why?

  • I would change that we don't always go over topics all together as a class.
  • Ac in the summer, and heat in the winter
  • Chairs!! They are way too small.
  • I love the idea of getting comfortable seats and having a relaxed environment. Even now being able to spread out makes me like it better.
  • I would change the accessibility of the assignments. I would like to be able to access the stuff we do in class before class. It would lead to better productivity, and would allow some people to fill up their study periods, lunch, and their empty class time.
  • I would like more printed copies for the playlists themselves
