Why PBL?

Tale of Two Classrooms

Bertelsmann Study: https://goo.gl/JczgXZ

4 of 17

One group was taught social studies content using traditional methods - lectures, readings, worksheets, quizzes, and tests.

5 of 17

The other group was taught the same content using real-world, project-based, collaborative and individual work with self-, peer-, and teacher assessments.

6 of 17

Which group do you think did better on assessments?

The group taught with traditional methods or the group taught through real-world, process-based, project-based methods?

7 of 17

Initially . . .

They both did equally well.

One year later, without notification, students took the same test.

8 of 17

The Results?

  • Students taught using traditional methods scored 25% on the test.

  • Students taught using project-based methods scored 75% on the test.

This is why we are implementing project-based learning at DKIES.

“When kids leave our classroom doors, do they see their world as a playground for ideas and learning, that there are problems to be solved, discoveries to be made, and people to impact?”
