Welcome to the seventh feature of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory TFI 1.7 - Professional Development

When implementing the features of the TFI it is important to keep the goal of PBIS in mind. The goal of PBIS is that 80-90% of the students will consistently demonstrate the behaviors that contribute to academic and social success when all adults model, teach and enforce those skills utilizing Proactive, Instructive and Restorative discipline approaches. The idea is simple, but implementation is complex. Each feature in Tier 1 of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) assists schools in developing the systems and policies to support implementation success.

TFI 1.7 ensures the annual PD calendar includes staff orientations and professional developments which directly support the modeling, teaching, and enforcing of prosocial behaviors.

Overview

Tasks to accomplish TFI 1.7 include:

Determining the level of training required for each of the 4 Core Tier 1 Features - Orientation or Professional Development,
Developing training sequences and instructional resources to support staff on the 4 Core Tier 1 SWPBIS Features,
Meeting with the PD-Team to share proposed scope/sequence

TFI 1.7 - The Big Idea

We agree all staff will be trained annually on the 4 Core Tier 1 SWPBIS Elements.

Implementation Support Website - TFI 1.7 Professional Development

All the new teachers met with the Tier 1 Team to learn how to develop Classroom Expectations and Unique Classroom Procedures.

The first 15 minutes of MOU was spent orienting staff to the updated School-Wide

Acknowledgement System.

Our staff decided to focus on giving Affective Statements using the PD Learning Cycle.

All staff received an orientation training on the Tier 1 Intervention Log.

Staff were oriented on how to request implementation assistance - it’s at the bottom of the Effective Classroom Practices: Self-Monitoring Plan.

We spent 30 minutes in MOU today reviewing the staff handbook with special focus on the Problem Behavior Policy and supporting documents.

Orientation

Orientation supports staff in successfully navigating cultural norms & expectations. Orientations establish the values of the school, alert staff of their obligations within the culture, and/or provide a mechanism to find resources and access additional support.

PD Learning Cycle (L-P-P-R)

Professional Development supports staff to improve staff knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness.

Teaching School-wide Expectations is the 1st Core Tier 1 Feature.

Each year all staff should be oriented to the School-Wide Expectations by Location, lesson plan templates, and the annual instructional schedule. New staff should also be provided an orientation on how to develop Classroom Expectations and unique Classroom Procedures.

Some Teams may also choose to take staff through the Learn, Plan, Practice, and Refine cycle to better understand behavior instruction. This may include how to teach Expectations, the SEL curriculum, and/or the bully prevention curriculum. This level of professional development would be necessary for schools who are not consistently implementing Proactive, Instructive and/or Restorative Practices, as they relate to this Core Tier 1 Feature.

Correcting Errors is the 3rd Core Tier 1 Feature.

Each year all staff should receive an orientation training to review the current Problem Behavior Policy along with all supporting documents. New staff should also receive an orientation overview on Trauma-Responsive Classrooms, PBIS and Restorative Justice along with how to utilize the Tier 1 Intervention Log and Office Referral Procedures.

Some Teams may also choose to take staff through the Learn, Plan, Practice, and Refine cycle for one or two practices. These practices may include: Regulation Strategies, Affective Statements, Restorative Questions, and/or Corrective Statements. This level of professional development would be necessary for schools who are not consistently implementing Proactive, Instructive and/or Restorative Practices, as they relate to this Core Tier 1 Feature.
