During the 2016-17 School Year, Stamford Public Schools conducted a long-term visioning and strategic planning process. The process was conducted in partnership with Cambridge Education, a management consulting organization specializing in school improvement and education change management.

The resulting vision: The Stamford Public Schools will be a learning organization that continuously improves its effective, innovative and transformational teaching and learning. We will challenge, inspire and prepare all students to be productive contributing members of society.

The District Quality Review (DQR) process conducted by Cambridge Education examined some school and district functions. The main findings of the DQR were used to identify the high-level strategies for the long-term improvement plan, which was presented to the BOE in May 2017.

Throughout the spring 2017, the district held three scheduled Advisory Committee meetings, each attended by over 90 community and district leaders. The meetings were an opportunity to share the strategies with, and obtain feedback from, the larger Stamford community. Participants reviewed the strategies identified by the Strategic Planning Committee and identified community-based initiatives aligned with the strategies that will have the greatest impact on student outcomes.

What are ELL classroom supports?

An assessment for students who have a home language other than English in order to determine the students’ level of English proficiency.

· If a student is not yet proficient in English, English language development support will be provided. We call this ESL.

· ESL classes are small group lessons, for one period a day, with a teacher who designs the learning activities to develop a child’s English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. This helps them acquire English and to be successful in their mainstream classroom

· State mandated - It is actually federally mandated to screen students based on the HLS and federally mandated to provide some form of language development support

· a standards-based curriculum is used (tool for helping students access the classroom)

· Native Language Support, for Spanish speakers is offered. This is one period a day with a Bilingual teacher. As English proficiency improves the level of support is reduced. Instruction is in Spanish/English

· ESL is offered at all elementary schools

· Native Language Support is offered at all elementary schools except for Strawberry Hill and Rogers.

One kind of support provided to ELL students determines students’ level of English proficiency.

If your child has an Individualized Education Plan and attends APPLES, your child’s current PPT team will work with the Kindergarten team to develop a plan for services for kindergarten to ensure that your child is optimizing their ability to access the general education curriculum.

This program currently services students that are medically fragile and require require a health care plan that is closely monitored by a nurse.
Students require adaptive equipment, specialized augmentative communication, and assistive technology in order to access their environment.
Art and music therapy are provided to support the student’s ability to become connected to their environment.

It is not what is taught but how it is taught that makes a magnet school different
All schools are held to the same standards and content demands
Methods of delivery and focus vary among magnet schools.

Elementary Magnet School Lottery applications is 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. The lottery drawing is Thursday, December 15, 2022 and acceptances are due on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

Once you are accepted to a magnet school, you must respond “yes” or “no” by the deadline (January 18th) and register your child for school by March 1st.
