Literature review

With the introduction of personal learning devices(IPads) for our students, Technology has become a significant part of supporting the learning process. Thus, our teachers should be prepared to use it effectively in their classrooms (Russell et al., 2003). The learning opportunities that are student-centered, motivating, and participatory (Meral Hakverdi-Can; Duyugu Sonmez, 2012) will allow the learner’s role to become more active and collaborative, with the ability to access information from multiple sources and media (Bishop, 2002), such as Apple Pages and Canva.

Integrating these instructional technologies into their education would improve teachers’ competence levels and at the same time, increase their tendency to use such techniques in their classrooms. (Meral Hakverdi-Can; Duyugu Sonmez, 2012). The exposure to technology-rich learning experience will ensure readiness in the students as our education system embarks on the Personal learning devices.

Challenges

However, the challenges that our teachers face are the lack of time to design learning environments. Additionally, most of the teachers’ proficiency and confidence in using technology such as IOS apps for inquiry may not be sufficient. (Meral Hakverdi-Can; Duyugu Sonmez, 2012). Thus, there needs to be adequate training session and professional development opportunities for the teachers to refine their ICT skills. A few ways this can be done would be through the Apple workshops organised by Apple Education and AsiaPac and stronger collaboration among departments.

Students’ feedback Stage 4

41 of 43

Teachers’ feedback

41

  • The Pages help us to monitor and assess students’ learning as the students can insert picture, videos and their reflection of their learning process.
  • If everything goes well, it is actually quite fun to use as an app – it is multimedia as well because you can add in different elements onto one document
  • Presentation is quite clear – because the templates are there and it doesn’t move much

42 of 43

Teachers’ feedback

42

  • Students need to be guided on the instruction on downloading of the Apple pages template at the beginning and how they can insert picture or videos in the Pages.
  • The students have claimed that their Pages document is either totally erased or ‘lost’ because they had to reset their iPad – they don’t know where to find it
  • Other times, the document is there but it is locked – so they don’t know how to open / access it
  • problems with cross compatibility unless it is converted into PDF and even with that – audio and video is still not accessible.
