I did not start playing tennis until my sophomore year of high school and shortly later became a varsity player at Cherokee Trail. I still am an active USTA tournament player today and am going to Arizona to represent Colorado at Nationals this April.
I have been coaching boys tennis for 6 years at CT, and finished my first season with the girls last Spring. I also give private lessons everyday throughout the summer for all age groups beginning at five years old. Tennis is my passion and I strive to spread the love of the game with my players and watch them grow through adversity both on and off the court.

I have been the sub liaison and main office assistant for Cherokee Trail since 2015. If I look familiar, it is because I am also the theater manager with Ms. Carlene O’Connor, I work the gate for many sports at CT and Legacy Stadium, and I am a club sponsor with Mr. Myers for Ethnic Essence. I have been coaching girls’ tennis since Spring 2016, and I love it! I love being able to get to know you and create a fun and safe environment for you to thrive in. We learn the fundamentals, and we create a lot of memories! Let’s have a great season! P.S. Bring lots of layers!

I have been a French teacher at CTHS since 2007, and I have been coaching boys’ and girls’ tennis since 2010. I love playing tennis and I am still playing in USTA men’s league, mixed leagues and tournaments. I hope to communicate my passion to our players.

Meet the coach…
My name is Coach Whipple, or “Whip” as many people call me. I’ll be working with the Varsity squad this year. I’ve coached boys and girls tennis at Smoky Hill and Cherokee Trail off and on for over 20 years. I played tennis for Evergreen high school, and those are some of the fondest memories of my youth. My hope is that you will fall in love with tennis as I did when I was 14, and that you will continue to play for the rest of your life. I moved from high school tennis to adult league tennis which is even more fun, in my opinion. My adult teams compete in Colorado and travel together to Sectional and National tournaments all over the US. And the best thing about adult tennis is that it is leveled so that no matter what your level of play, there is a league and team for you at your current skill level. I also teach and coach tennis part-time at Parker Racquet Club. If you have any questions about lessons, or tennis after high school, please stop by and ask me. I work in the CT library as the Library Coordinator.

Player Expectations Continued…
Matches: Home matches are scheduled to start at 4pm. Varsity plays first followed by JV. Players who finish matches early are expected to stay to cheer on all of their team members. If you need to leave early, you must get permission from your coach.
Transportation: The school district no longer provides bus transportation to away matches. As a result, transportation to and from away matches must be organized by players and parents. Coaches are not permitted, by district rule, to arrange transportation to or from matches.
Fundraising: Players on the CT tennis team are historically very academically minded so coaches do not require players to take the time to fundraise. There is a minimum fee to cover match balls, nets, the players’ banquet fees, awards and other expenses. We also want 100% of the fundraising to go to the CT Girls tennis. Therefore we are asking for a minimum single fee of $50 and a new can of high altitude balls.

Consequences
Missed Practices: Athletes who miss practice will be suspended from the team for at least one match. Written excuses for an absence will be allowed from a parent or teacher only. Acceptable excuses for an absence might include, but are not limited to doctor’s appointments, illness, or family emergency. Athletes can always miss practice if they have to stay after school to get help with coursework. JV#1 and #2 will work more leniently with the players on missed practices or late arrivals.
Etiquette: If these standards of etiquette are not being met, coaches have no qualm about pulling a player off the court and defaulting the match in which she was playing. Athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner consistent with the expectation of “good citizenship” in class, on and off campus, during the entire tennis season. Any complaint received by the coaching staff could result in suspension from the team until the situation is resolved.
Removal from team: Players are expected to understand that the coaching staff has the right to remove any athlete from the playing roster, and/or team, if the decision is in the best interest of the team as a whole. The decision will be based on effort, attitude, and response to coaching.
