Overview
Today we will:
4
REVIEW KEY TERMS!
GENRE: Genre means a few different things in college English classes, but it’s most often used to indicate the type of writing: a poem, a newspaper article, an essay, a short story, a novel, a legal brief, an instruction manual, etc. (Bunn 77)
AUDIENCE: Who is meant to read this piece? Who is it mostly directed to?
PURPOSE: The author’s reasons for writing (persuade, inform, entertain)
MESSAGE (KEY IDEA): The meaning, key idea, main points, supporting evidence, ets.
An important reminder!
In college, it is important, when reading texts, to remember that you’re reading to understand how the text was written (focusing on GENRE, AUDIENCE< PURPOSE) and NOT JUST on the MEANING and ASSESSING if a TEXT IS GOOD OR BAD.
