Chapter 12

Lovesick (Rameck)

  • Rameck meets a girl named Kay, and they start dating
  • Rameck finds out that Kay has another boyfriend at a different college
    • They get back together and break up multiple times
  • Rameck considers breaking the pact (by dropping out) to win Kay back.
  • Kay reveals she is falling in love with someone else-- Rameck is heartbroken
    • He never tells Sam or George about his plan to break the pact.

Chapter 13

Access Med (Sam)

  • Sam and Rameck are accepted into the Access Med program
    • They will have to transfer to Rutgers University and leave George behind
  • Sam meets a girl while at Rutgers
    • They break up so Sam can focus on school
    • When Sam decides to get back together with her, he finds out she is 4 months pregnant
  • Sam gets into a fight at a club, and Rameck jumps in to help him
    • Rameck finds out years later that his jaw was broken during the fight
  • Sam and Rameck make money by taking notes for other students
  • Sam thinks his sister Fellease might have HIV, but she will not get tested

Chapter 14

Old Ties (george)

  • George moves back to Newark to go to dental school

  • George, Rameck, and Sam struggle with money during medical/dental school

  • George’s mom works 14+ hour days to help him pay for school

  • George bounces around from home to apartment
    • He begins to have issues focusing in school

  • George gets mugged in his old neighborhood

  • George rents an apartment
    • Former friends move in and cause trouble
    • He has to kick them out

Chapter 15

D.W.B (Rameck)

  • Rameck and his friend are followed by the cops one night
    • The cops stop them, pull out guns, and curse at them
    • They find a knife in the car, Rameck is taken to jail
  • After his arrest, Rameck has to go to court
    • His lawyer misses many court dates, and Rameck is afraid he will not be properly defended
  • At the trial, they realize they have lost the evidence (the knife), and the charges are dropped

Chapter 16

Becoming Doctors (Sam)

  • Sam finds out he failed his medical board exam
    • He would have to re-take it to continue in school
  • After Sam passes his test , he is able to move on to clinicals

  • In his 4th year, Sam decides to study Emergency Medicine
    • He realizes he wants to work in the ER
  • Sam decides to go to the University of Maryland for his residency, but instantly regrets it
    • He considers dropping out before taking a position back in Newark

Chapter 17�Graduation (George)

  • George, Sam, and Rameck graduate from medical and dental school

  • They invite friends and family to the ceremony-- including former teachers
  • As he watches Sam and Rameck walk across the stage, George realizes they finally made it

  • One of the guests at graduation brought a friend who was a reporter
    • The next day, the 3 boys’ story is on the front page of the paper

Chapter 18

GOodbye (Rameck)

  • While Rameck was still in school, Ma retired and moved to Columbia, South Carolina
  • Soon after, she is diagnosed with severe Cirrhosis, and has to move back to NJ so her family can care for her
  • Rameck says that even though she gets sicker and sicker, she never complains
  • Eventually, the doctors say she needs a liver transplant-- they eventually find a donor, and she has the surgery
  • A few days later, though, Ma passes away

Chapter 19

Home Again (Sam)

  • Sam moves back to Newark to work at Beth Israel Hospital
    • He lives with friends in a shared house
  • After the news story about the 3 boys comes out, they become famous around Newark
    • they begin speaking at schools and events

  • The boys take the money they make from public speaking and create a charity-- The Three Doctors Foundation
  • Sam ends up treating friends and family at the hospital-- including his sister, who is dying of AIDS

Epilogue

(George, Sam, Rameck)

The Three Doctors’ final advice:

  • Make trustworthy friends who have the same goal
  • Find strength in your differences
  • Believe in yourself and your friends
  • Compete in a healthy way
  • Communicate openly, honestly, and often
  • Lean on your friends, and allow them to lean on you
