The Project
Our project focused on creating a comprehensive online course to teach individuals how to customize Moodle themes using SCSS/CSS.
For the purpose of this course, our efforts were focused primarily on Module 2: CSS.
WHO
WHY
HOW
Overall: need for a cost-effective platform.
CSS: Lay the foundations of styling the Moodle Bootstrap
Development of various modules to build the skillset to customize their own Moodle LMS.

ADDIE Benefits
Some of the major benefits this model provided to our team.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Each phase allows for iterative improvements and supports customization.
01
Systematic Approach
Ensures comprehensive planning and thoughtful development of learning experiences.
02
Risk Mitigation
Supports more efficient use of resources by catching problems early in the development cycle.
03
Quality Control
Built-in evaluation phase allows for continuous assessment and refinement.
04
Learning Theories
The course incorporates diverse media formats, real-world coding exercises, clear objectives with practice opportunities, and supportive feedback mechanisms to maintain student engagement and confidence.
The course design incorporated structured, manageable modules, clear scaffolding tools, and UDL principles, effectively reducing cognitive load while enhancing information processing and retention.
Constructivism
ARCS Model of Motivation
Cognitive Load Theory
Humans construct learning by building on prior knowledge through assimilation and accommodation. The course provides pre-testing, structured modules, scaffolding, and strategically repeated examples.
Alignment
The CSS module effectively integrates specific learning objectives, practical content delivery, and hands-on assessments to build students' coding skills through a well-structured blend of theory and application.
Module targets essential CSS skills through specific, measurable learning outcomes.
Objectives
Combines theory with hands-on practice using tools like CodePen and infographics.
Content
Evaluates learning through debugging exercises, code creation, and reflective discussions.
Assessment
Technology
We chose Canvas to deliver the content to ensure accessibility and provide an LMS that most people are comfortable using.
We selected Code Pen as our hands-on sandbox and simulator for students to see how their CSS choices impact the final outcome.
The goal was to create inclusive digital learning materials by ensuring accessibility through structured content, alternative formats, descriptive media descriptions, and proactive accessibility checking to support all students, especially those with disabilities.
Accessibility & Copyright
Our strategy focused on legally and ethically using educational materials by creating original content, leveraging Creative Commons resources, utilizing proper citations, linking to external content, and using royalty-free media to ensure compliance and respect intellectual property rights.

Challenges & Lessons Learned
Designing without a subject matter expert challenged our grasp of the project's big picture.
SMEs
There were risks in proceeding without a SME for a technical topic, and in constantly realigning the LOs.
Adjusting
Smaller work segments were effective, and further task breakdown was recommended.
Chunking
Despite varying CSS expertise and testing with users outside our target demographic, we had positive results.
Testers
Crafting effective survey questions that yield actionable data proved challenging.
