Notes for Teachers

  • Context: hook activity at the beginning of a unit
  • Students will make predictions about what will happen to matter that is either heated or cooled.
  • Students will use ipads or tablets as a portion of their evidence of learning and/or to add to their digital portfolios afterwards. Learners will take photos of the matter before and after temperature changes.
  • Students will record a learning reflection statement, explaining what was learned and evaluating how they performed according to the learning scale.
  • Please check on food allergies for students prior to conducting this lesson.

● Heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not.

Objective(s):

Today we will observe different objects and think about how heat or cooling objects change matter to different states after we guess what may happen prior.

We will write the facts about our observations.

We will take pictures of the objects before and after temperature changes.

We will type or record what we are guessing will happen and what actually happens to include with our pictures via our ipads or tablets. We are exploring the following questions: what do we think will happen? Why? What actually happened?

We will reflect on what we have learned & how we performed according to the learning scale and record a statement to express this.

Agenda (44 minutes)

2 minutes—Ask questions from previous slide.

5 minutes–Read “Many Kinds of Matter” by Jennifer Boothroyd; (can be accessed online Via Epic Schools free of charge or hard copy may be purchased).

3 minutes—explain that students will observe a form of matter of their choice from predetermined items assigned by the teacher to each group. Students will decide if their object will be placed in the sun, refrigerator or freezer as a group. The items will be moved to their respective places. Introduce the learning scale to describe how the activity will be graded. Assign roles and rules in terms of cooperative learning in groups of 4.

20 minutes—students will take pictures prior to temperature changes, voice record what they think will happen, take pictures after temperature changes, use their ipad or tablet to take a picture and voice record observations & and their reflections.

7 minutes: students watch a video: States of Matter for Kids | Science Video for Preschool & Kindergarten | Kids Academy

5 minutes—discussion what did we learn today?

2 minutes—complete exit ticket of teacher choice

Hands-on Activity Instructions

  • Suggested group structures (Cooperative Learning groups of 4 with jobs—Timekeeper, Scribe, Reporter, Cheerleader)
  • Step-by-step instructions:
  • Show the students which object their group will observe today.
  • Students will choose if the object will be heated or cooled.
  • Students will guess what will happen as a result, take pictures before and after the temperature change.
  • Students will use their ipad or tablet to take the pictures in each instance.
  • Use the voice recording feature to record predictions and results.
  • Use the voice recording feature to record a reflection statement explaining what was learned today and how you performed according to the learning scale.

Assessment

Use the following rubric to score each model:

4—My group and I observed a form of matter that was heated or cooled. We labeled the name of our matter, guessed what would happen to it, recorded what we’d observed and justified why this probably happened. We produced a picture of our matter and typed and/or recorded facts about our observations in our ipads or tablets. We recorded a statement reflecting on what was learned.

3—My group and I observed matter. We guessed what would happen to it. We produced a picture of our matter and typed/or recorded facts about the matter in our ipads or tablets. We recorded a reflection statement.

2—We attempted to observe matter. We may have mislabeled the name of the matter we observed, struggled to produce a single fact about the matter, may not have produced a picture of our matter, failed to have record facts about the matter in our ipads or tablets. we may have forgotten our reflection statement.

1—-We couldn’t get started, created an off task response or were genuinely confused about expectations or what we learned.

Differentiation

Students will predict what will happen to an ice cube, popsicle, ice cream or stick of butter when sitting either in the sun or in the classroom for a period of time. Students will observe and record what happens.

Provide a word wall with key vocabulary and image.

Provide additional resources such as videos and books from the library.

Provide sentence stems.

Remediation

Extension/Enrichment

Students can explore other items—predict what will happen to gelatin, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc.

Students can create digital/electronic notes or records of what happens to these items when either placed in the sun or a freezer (the students may choose).
