Time Standards: Overview

  • Tools for setting goals and qualifying for certain meets
  • Specific to age, gender, event, and pool type (SCY/SCM/LCM)
  • Available on team website under Meets & Events submenu
  • Set by governing bodies: USA Swimming, Oregon Swimming, and other local swimming committees (LSCs)
  • Based on analysis of past meet results
  • Change annually

Time Standards: How We Use Them

  • Remember that “ABC meets” are for everyone!
  • Parents may find a list of qualified swimmers in the Forms & Documents section of the main event page in advance of some meets. Notice “as of” date at top of these reports.
  • Meet registration shows qualifying times in black, other times in red.

Coaches and swimmers set goals and measure progress.

Parents help swimmers register for meets.

  • Coaches lead annual goal-setting exercises
  • Look first at the Oregon Swimming (OSI) time standards. These ‘A’ times are sometimes called State Times.

TIP: Parents can wait to discuss time standards until after swimmers raise the topic, then focus on listening and asking questions.

IMX/IMR Challenge: Overview

  • USA Swimming challenges each athlete to complete a specific set of events within each swim season (SCY or LCM).
  • The list of events varies by age, with shorter distances for younger swimmers and longer distances for older swimmers.
  • New swimmers can start with the IMR Challenge and move on to the IMX Challenge in the future.
  • Once all events are complete, your swimmer earns an IMX/IMR score.
