Ugly Ideal

Using your own photos and appropriated images you will use photoshop and collaging methods, filters, and tools to create an "ugly" self portrait image that will be used for a final drawing.

The final should be a life size portrait of at least 5 feet, larger is welcome.

In this image take into consideration the wide use of airbrushing and distortion techniques prominently used in video and print to create images for magazine covers, music videos, or even instagram. I am interested in seeing this pushed as far as possible. Get weird.

This image should use a limited palette. This means that the overall palette should be based on conscious relationships. Such as a primary palette, warm tones, cool tones, complementarities, monotone. Ask yourself why you are using this palette for this image. How does it create mood? What effect does it have on the viewer?

I strongly encourage material experimentation but this requires time. You may need to do some test runs to make sure the different materials will work.

Make sure that you consider various uses of resolution and scale.

It may be interesting to print your image, work on top of it with various media, rescan adjust in photoshop, print work on top, rescan...

Your grade will be based on strength of craft, form, composition, and concept.

Please do thumbnails and sketches and relay them to me so that we can discuss the drawings development.
