Part 1

  • We meet Rainsford and Whitney, two hunters who are traveling to the Amazon by boat.

  • They spot a mysterious island called “Ship-Trap Island” and marvel at the mysteries surrounding it.

  • As Whitney goes to bed, Rainsford remains on the deck to smoke. Suddenly, he hears gunshots and screams coming from the island. He leans over and falls overboard.

  • When overboard, he swims towards the island and meets General Zaroff and his mute assistant, Ivan.

  • General Zaroff invites Rainsford to his home...

Part 2

  • During dinner, Rainsford finds out that General Zaroff

Is a hunter much like himself.

  • General Zaroff informs Rainsford that he has grown bored of hunting animals and instead, he hunts humans on his island.

  • This information concerns Rainsford and he declines the General’s offer to join him in the hunt that night.

  • Instead, Rainsford claims he feels ill and attempts to fall asleep in General Zaroff’s home.

Part 3

  • Rainsford asks General Zaroff if he can leave the island. The General refuses and instead encourages that Rainsford and the General hunt each other.

  • Rainsford has three days to outwit the General in order to win. General Zaroff gives Rainsford a head start.

  • Rainsford is careful not to leave a trail during the night and rests in a big tree.

  • Rainsford sets up three traps: Malay Mancatcher, Burmese Tiger Trap, and the Sapling Trap (Where Ivan dies).

Part 3

  • General Zaroff and the pack corner Rainsford so, Rainsford jumps off a cliff and into the sea before swimming towards the General’s home.

  • General Zaroff relaxes upon thinking he is alone in his home.

  • Just as General Zaroff begins to get ready for bed, he finds Rainsford hiding behind a curtain ready to attack.

  • The two men ready to duel. One (the loser) will die and be fed to the dogs. The other (the winner) will live and rest in Zaroff’s bed.

  • The story ends with Rainsford resting in Zaroff’s bed.

  • Rainsford had to confront his own moral stance on taking animals’ lives. He confronts his beliefs about their fear.
  • Zaroff has an internal struggle with his own motivations and boredom.

External: (Man vs. Man)

  • There is man versus man conflict between Rainsford and Zaroff as they engage in his hunt - this conflict needs to be resolved with the death of one or the other.

Suspense

Example:

  • The story opens on a “dark tropical night” which is eerie and sinister. This adds intrigue as the reader almost expects something ominous to happen.
  • In the very opening, the discussion about superstitions and the mysterious island adds intrigue the reader suspects that something bad will happen on this island, but doesn’t know exactly what.
