The WCDSB is an inclusive space

WCDSB is an inclusive space for all where our students, families, and staff ought to feel seen, valued, and heard. This day reinforces our commitment to ensure our schools and buildings are safe spaces for the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

As a Catholic community, we support all 2SLGBTQIA+ students, families, and staff through the practice of “accompaniment”. Pope Francis defined accompaniment as an intentional relationship oriented towards growth and transformation that first requires the spiritual accompanier to open their hearts and be vulnerable (2023). Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrates accompaniment: On the road to Emmaus, Jesus helps his disciples understand faith through active listening, conversation, and a shared journey (Luke 24:13-35).

Together, we journey as God’s children, foregoing judgement (James 4:11-12), to create and nurture a warm and welcoming learning community in Christ.

The WCDSB is an inclusive space

As reported in “Still in Every Class in Every School: Final report on the second climate survey on homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in Canadian schools” (Peter, Campbell & Taylor 2021), 2SLGBTQIA+ students continue to struggle to find safe spaces within school.

The study also highlights that 2SLGBTQIA+ students attending Catholic schools reported greater incidents of harassment, “especially in relation to sexual and/or gender identity”, and that students were less likely to disclose these occurrences to school staff. Moreover, the study stated that “only a quarter of 2SLGBTQ participants who attend Catholic schools reported that teachers or school staff always (9%) or most of the time (17%) intervene when homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic remarks were made.”

In Scripture, Jesus demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the marginalized, consistently advocating for their dignity and inclusion (Luke 4:18-19; Matthew 19:14), disregarding social and cultural boundaries that harmed the dignity of a person (John 4:7-26; Mark 1:41-42).

We are reminded that God’s love surpasses social divisions, and calls his followers to uphold the same principles of mercy and justice. At the WCDSB, we have a zero tolerance for hate or bias motivated incidents, including those directed at the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Hey Mustangs!

We are looking for some students to come out and be a Mustang Buddy! What’s a Mustang Buddy you ask? It’s someone who likes to give back to the school community and help create an inclusive environment!

If you are interested, please see Ms. Short in room 123.
