Learning To Take Stats

  • Button detailed definitions - click here.
    • Or use the Help button in the app
  • It’s best to “practice” before going to a live match
    • Find a video of your team or any team you know
    • Set up the team properly
    • Begin taking stats and try to avoid stopping the video because you can’t stop a live match
  • Progression
    • Start with just the end of rally stats. This is the easiest way to stat.
    • Add first touch - your serve rating or your receive rating
      • This is extremely helpful and Serve and Receive are the most important measure of your team’s level of play
      • Taking first and last rally stat will allow you to watch the game
      • It will also provide you useful coaching information
    • Add digs
    • Add hitting attempts

Stat Taking Philosophy

  • Never provide Earned stats to your opponent - Aces, Kills
    • Why?
      • Because you are taking stats to improve YOUR team’s performance.
        • Opponent’s Ace = Your Team’s Passing Error
        • Opponent’s Kill = Your Team’s Digging Error

      • Without this information, you won’t know what to work on

      • Additionally, many coaches assign an Earned Kill to the opponent when the opponent makes a powerful hit that is hard to dig.

        • Not assigning the digging error to your team will actually decrease your team’s digging error and in turn increase your digging percentage. So your digging looks better when you are actually doing worse.

Serve Analysis

  • The key stat in serving is how much is your serving putting your opponent out of system:
    • 4 Serve = Ace - Opponent no return
    • 3 Serve = Opponent 1 Pass or out of system
    • 2 Serve = Opponent 2 Pass or unable to run their middle
  • Depending on your league and level of play
    • High level play - 4 and 3 rating serves
    • Mid level - 4, 3, and 2
    • Low Level - Ace rate, Low Error rate
  • Service Errors don’t correlate strongly with losing however
    • Target 90% good or 10% error rate or less
    • You want to serve tough and consistently
