January 18th ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Day

Peace & Equality Quote: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: the time is always right to do what is right! January is the month we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and we honor his memory on the third Monday of each January. This year MKL Day falls on January 18th. Many people choose to honor his legacy by participating in MLK Day activities, MLK Day of Service opportunities, Peace Marches and readings of his famous quotes. As Quarter 3 begins and we return to school for Blended Learning on January 11th, let us start January off right and think about our words and actions and how they might affect others. Let us all remember the example of Dr. King, who stood up and spoke out for others who did not have a voice. As we remember his example, we recall that he choose the path of peace and non-violence. Let us choose peace as well so that we may unite for kindness, acceptance and justice joining him as peacemakers. "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

February is National Black History Month!

Did you know: The month of February is National Black History Month a time where we celebrate the contributions of Black Americans. And on February 15th we celebrate President Lincoln’s Birthday with a national holiday and we have a day off from school! President Lincoln is a significant figure in America History. He fought for the end of slavery in the United States with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Another significant figure in American History is Frederick Douglass whose birthday is commemorated on February 14th. One of the reasons that we celebrate Black History Month in February is so that it could coincide with the timeof year when both Douglass and Abraham Lincoln celebrated their birthdays. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery.

Frederick Douglass is one of the most prominent Black men in U.S. History. He was a leader in the abolitionist movement, a leader of women’s rights, and influential in ending slavery. None of which he set out to do on his own.
